Healthcare Support Worker, Haematology Day Unit / OPD

Job summary

The band 3 role in Haematology Day Unit is seen an essential part of our department that enables us to deliver safe efficient care to our patients in our busy Day Unit/Outpatient whereby Healthcare support workers are required to work with minimum supervision between our two areas. The role also involves providing high quality same day care whilst working within the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that our patients who suffer from blood cancers & blood disorders have an excellent patient experience. Work under the supervision of healthcare professionals like nurses, providing essential support for individuals' physical & emotional well-being & ensuring their comfort throughout their care journey. The role also requires smooth running of appointments by getting activities such as taking of observations & blood test done in a timely manner. Integral in managing patient flow & unit coordination in a busy unit requires excellent organisation skills. Working on a regular basis with minimum direct supervision from a registered nurse requires prioritising of your daily workload.

Main duties of the job

To organise prioritise own workload according to patient and department's need with or without direct supervision. To carry out a range of clinical duties with minimal supervision, triaging patients on arrival to department, including for example, blood pressure monitoring, oxygen saturation levels, body temperature, pulse rate and respiration rate, ECG, glucose monitoring, collection and testing of urine samples, faecal samples always ensuring delivery of high-quality patient care. To co-operate with and maintain good working relationships with both the multidisciplinary team and other Healthcare and Social Care professionals. Have an empathetic approach to patients, carers and relatives, answering any queries, suggestions or concerns they may have where possible, referring them to the registered nurse where appropriate. To work within defined standards, protocols, policies and procedures for the unit, directorate and UHCW NHS trust always ensuring delivery of the highest level of patient care. To undertake venepuncture procedures and remove cannula in a safe manner to reduce any risk of infection. To take swabs without supervision from patients to test for various infections such as MRSA.

Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for own actions, ensuring all patient interactions/observations are communicated to the appropriate healthcare practitioner.
  • Show dignity and respect in dealings with patients, staff and visitors.
  • Undertake agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks, extending range following training in defined areas. Ensure referral to trained staff and documentation is completed as appropriate.
  • Organise own daily workload and undertake tasks independently as well as part of the team whilst also ensuring adherence to department handover.
  • Assist with personal patient care needs.
  • Complete training and assessment in defined practical skills to aid the trained staff in delivery of optimum patient management e.g. cannulation, ECG and venepuncture.
  • Ensure stock levels are maintained by utilising ordering systems and assist the trained staff in ordering of specialist supplies and equipment.
  • Assist the designated trained staff with link nurse support and cascade training.
  • Frequent processing of patient property and valuables, ensuring accurate documentation where appropriate.
  • Support less experienced members of staff in their orientation to the ward and role
  • Utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient data
  • Support the team in expected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need
  • Support staff and patients exposed to difficult situations arising in the clinical area e.g after receipt of bad news or following an unexpected event
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
