Emergency Medicine Modern Matron

Job summary

A high profile, accessible and responsive leader with managerial responsibility for nursing service delivery and advice across a number of departments within a speciality. Working as Nursing lead for the triumvirate group management structure, demonstrating and developing collaborative working within and across the MDT.

The Matron will have responsibility for the Urgent Treatment Centres's within Emergency Medicine- including off site locations in the City of Coventry Health Centre (CUTC), Rugby Urgent Treatment Centre and the co-located Urgent Treatment Centre at UHCW. The applicant will have experience of advanced practice.

Able to make informed decisions within their own specialty and scope of professional practice, involving patients and public to ensure agreed standards, targets and objectives are met. The keys focus is on quality improvements in safety, effectiveness and patient experience. Corporate responsibilities including support for other colleagues and specialities and hospital bleep rota duties. Responsible for delivering the goals of the Matron's Handbook taking a proactive as well as reactive stance on cleaning standards and infection control.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

Our Emergency Medicine Clinical Group hosts our Emergency Departments, which are among the busiest and most innovative in the country. We have dedicated adult and children's emergency departments who treat between 600 and 800 patients per day. We have 3 designated UTC's and we are a designated receiving Major Trauma Centre for Northampton, Kettering, Warwick and George Eliot Hospitals. The Acute Medicine Department provides a consultant led team for acutely ill medical patients presenting through a single point of access in our Emergency Department. The Medical and Acute Decisions Units and short stay wards are closely integrated within the Group.

  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  • Responsible for delivering the goals of the Matrons Handbook, taking a proactive as well as reactive stance on cleaning standards and infection control.
  • Highly developed communication skills enabling maintenance of high quality service within a complex and challenging environment with often, conflicting priorities. Demonstrates accountability for standards and continuous quality improvements in line with the Trusts values.
  • Responsible for a workforce working with advanced practice. Demonstrates experience of working with a workforce with an advanced practice qualification and able to role model professional standards within this field.
  • Responsible for the provision of a high quality professional Nursing and Midwifery service across a number of departments, promoting best practice and implementing a review process that looks at quality and efficiency to meet the needs of patients and service, working with other departments, specialities and colleagues where support is needed to ensure best practice and safe service delivery.
  • To demonstrate clinical credibility, participating frequently in back to the floor days as well as supporting areas when necessary. Being visible as a senior Nursing or midwifery leader at all times, both within the Trust and when representing the Trust at external events.
  • Contributes to development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines across a number of departments, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.
  • Overall budget responsibility for service resources across a number of departments; in particular ownership of Nursing or Midwifery pay budgets, monitoring variance and implementing contingency plans as appropriate, e.g. bank, agency expenditure and absence management.
  • Support the Clinical Director with the Group management team in ensuring service objectives are met.
