University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust

Lung Cancer Screening Assistant Practitioner

The closing date is 28 July 2025

Job summary

The overall purpose of the Lung Cancer Screening (LCS) Programme is to enable the early detection of lung cancer in order to save lives. Coventry & Warwickshire Health & Care Partnership and the West Midlands Cancer Alliance has identified high disease and smoking prevalence areas within Coventry where a significant impact can be made from detecting early-stage lung cancer.

The Lung Cancer Screening Associate Practitioner will form an integral part of the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will work as part of Lung Cancer screening Team under the guidance and supervision of a registered practitioner.

The position will involve communicating CT scan results to patients and identifying and addressing any potential delays in the patient's journey. The role will include clinically reviewing low risk individuals who may present red flag symptoms or concerns, ensuring appropriate escalation to the specialist nursing team. There will be a key focus in encouraging patients to participate in the screening programme in order to detect any signs of lung cancer or other incidental findings at an early stage.

The role may require travel to CT scanner sites and other hospital locations to deliver equipment or support service needs. The post holder should have access to a vehicle for work purposes.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

  1. The individual in this role will collaborate with senior nursing and management staff to uphold and enhance the central focus on the patient and carer experience at each stage of their journey.
  2. Support the Lung Cancer Screening Team by responding to the non-complex workload and referring to the Nursing Team as appropriate.
  3. Ensure the appropriate management of patient information and the co-ordination of patient pathways through collaborative working.
  4. Use the expertise and knowledge of professional colleagues, acknowledging the boundaries of different roles.
  5. Provide patients with comprehensive information about the Lung Cancer Screening programme, its objectives, and the subsequent steps.
  6. Conduct lung health check assessments to assess eligibility to participate in the Lung Cancer Screening programme and eligibility for further investigations, as well as providing basic advice and support.
  7. Clinically reviewing individuals at low risk of low cancer with red flag symptoms and escalating to the nursing team when appropriate.
