University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust are seeking to appoint a consultant to our Emergency Medicine Department based at University Hospital Coventry.

The post holder will be expected to work with other members of the Emergency Team to provide a world class clinical service in Emergency Medicine across adult, children and minor injury departments. The department supports annualised rostering and joint roles with Intensive Care Medicine, Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine, Paediatric Emergency Medicine, and Sports and Exercise Medicine, with several of the current consultants working in these areas as part of their job plan. We are also able to support less than full time working over fixed days or flexible across the week.

We are a designated Major Trauma Centre (MTC) with a 24-hour helipad outside of our Emergency Department and we receive a high volume of our cases from local air ambulances. We are one of the highest performing MTC's in the UK on the basis of several figures, and one of the busiest in terms of case numbers.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Take ongoing responsivity for patients under their care.
  • Participate in the development of the emergency medicine service treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of emergency medical conditions.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities andparticipate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
  • Participate in the on-call rota on an equal basis with Consultant colleagues and provide regular shop floor cover to ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided out of normal working hours.
  • Act in the capacity of trauma team leader for all trauma calls as part of Major Trauma Centre (MTC) provision arrangements.
  • Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the speciality, to include appraisal.
  • Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies.
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit.This will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.
  • Ensure that all Trust-wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who come into contact with services provided by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

Department of Emergency Medicine

The Adult Emergency Department sees over 150,000 patients per year. The department serves the City of Coventry (population 325,000) but is also the receiving hospital for large parts of the midlands for major trauma cases and major incidents as part of the national trauma network.

We provide a number of tertiary services to an extended population and thus the ED receives a significant number of emergency admissions for sub-regional specialties; including interventional cardiology, stroke medicine, oncology, renal medicine and neurosurgery. The department has strong links with the local Primary Care Trusts and Ambulance Service and has developed innovative cross-sector initiatives to support admission avoidance and promote community care. The department is well staffed across medical and nursing tiers and is not dependent on a locum workforce.

Facilities

We have:

A 7-bedded adult resuscitation room with a two bay brand new negative pressure rooms completed this year. The CT scanner is adjacent to the Resuscitation room.

A 2-bedded dedicated paediatric resuscitation room.

Majors area with 32 major rooms with 10 brand new completed this year.

6-bedded RAT triage room for admission via ambulance.

Suite of offices where departmental administration is performed

Teaching

All Consultants are expected to be Educational Supervisors for the junior medical staff and ACP staff within the department. If additional training is required, this will be fully supported by the department.

Research

The ED team have broad research interests, are actively involved in several quantitative and qualitative research projects. We are a recruitment centre for multi centre international trials.

Opportunities to become Principal Investigator for forthcoming studies are available.
