Job summary

Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services offer a range of diagnostics tests across a number of departments in the region. The Cellular Pathology service receives approximately 56,000 cases per year across 3 NHS Trusts; University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, George Eliot NHS Trust and South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust.

The Histology laboratories are based at University Hospital Coventry and Warwick Hospital, with staff performing many histological techniques including dissection, microtomy, special staining, QC, and immunohistochemistry testing.

This is a network post including our two histology sites of SWFT and UHCW; you will be expected to work across both sites but the main base is UHCW.

We are looking for a Specialist Scientific Lead in Tissue Dissection & Sampling to lead our team including Biomedical scientists and Clinical Scientists within the Dissection laboratory to provide a high quality, timely, reliable diagnostic Histology service.

You will be responsible for performing, allocating and supervising the tasks required for the delivery of a fit for purpose medical laboratory dissection service. You will analyse and select clinical samples to provide a diagnostic service to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, and effective resource management.

Working shifts are 7.5 hours rotating between 7am and 7pm Monday- Saturday across the 2 sites.

Main duties of the job

You will liaise closely with the other Advanced BMSs, Reporting BMSs and Section Lead BMSs, the Cellular Pathology Laboratory Manager, Deputy Head BMS and clinical team to ensure provision of a high-quality service within the resources available.

The post holder must be a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist registered with the HCPC, possess a relevant higher degree e.g. MSc in Pathological Sciences and hold the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histopathological Dissection. The successful candidate will hold or be working towards the IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Dissection.

The post holder with work within the dissection team to assist Consultant Histopathologist' s in specimen dissection. The post holder will be expected to teach, train and supervise Biomedical Scientists and junior medical staff in the dissection area. The post holder will ensure that the specialised technical assistance required by Pathologists is provided by the BMS and BMA staff in the department.

Working under their own initiative and referring to the Consultant Histopathologist as required the post holder will undertake a role that involves the macroscopic description, dissection and block sampling of specimens that fall within normal limits the RCPath designation of category, A, B, C, D & E. Accuracy and attention to detail is essential. The post holder will train to dissect a wider range of category D & E specimens using specialist knowledge as required by the service.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible (in conjunction with the lead BMS in Histopathology) for the day to day organisation of the histological dissection section of Histopathology.

In conjunction with the Consultant Histopathologist the post holder will participate in the sampling of fresh tissue for research and Biobank (Tissue Bank). The post holder will be required to train junior medical staff in the sampling of fresh tissue for research and Biobank (Tissue Bank).

In liaison with the Advanced BMS in specimen reception and dissection, the post holder will ensure a timely workflow and assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.

Technical and Supervisory

  1. Daily supervise and monitor staff in the performance of routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient and environmental samples containing potentially infectious material including tissue specimens using complex and highly specialised techniques to exacting medical and scientific standards according to standard operating procedures. To perform such diagnostic tests as required.
  2. Daily to plan, allocate and reallocate work schedules for themselves and the team and determine work priorities to meet service needs
  3. To deputise for the Cellular Pathology Manager in Dissection as required
  4. Record, and validate results. Report and technically authorise individual reports from the team in electronic form and / or verbally to persons authorised to receive them e.g. Medical, nursing and non medical staff
  5. Ensure quality assurance procedures are followed. Quality check outputs including maintaining necessary internal records and investigate non conformance
  6. To organise and participate in external and internal quality assurance schemes and vertical and horizontal audits
  7. Participate in departmental quality review meetings and propose and implement change as appropriate
  8. Organise and monitor maintenance on routine and complex equipment to ensure accuracy and precision of results. Troubleshoot faults and take appropriate action to maintain the patient service
  9. Prioritise work to meet local and national laboratory performance targets eg. turnaround times for results, as directed by departmental managers
  10. To propose, oversee and develop the implementation of new techniques, equipment and working practices
  11. Prepare, review and update standard operating procedures
  12. Provide and receive specialist knowledge in a departmental section to staff and users
  13. Monitor and maintain stocks of materials, reagents, consumables and equipmen
  14. Deal with telephone enquiries when difficulty in comprehension may occur
