We are looking for Occupational Therapists for our rotation at UHCW NHS Trust. The rotation offers a wide range of learning opportunities and experiences, to develop clinical skills across the patient pathway within the Acute setting.
In-patient Therapies:Surgery (including our new Severe Intestinal Failure service, acute amputations, gastro & general surgery)Stroke (Hyper-acute and Acute services)T&O at Coventry (Primary focus of traumatic orthopaedic surgery, includes working with our Major Trauma team)T&O at Rugby (Primary focus of elective orthopaedic surgery)Care of the Elderly (dementia, delirium and frailty)Medicine at Coventry (includes Cardiology, Respiratory, Oncology, Endocrinology, Renal)Medicine Rehab at Rugby (optimising patients for successful recovery)Neurosciences (includes Neurology & Neurosurgery)
Out-patient Therapies:Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (Long-term Neurological management)Upper Limb (Therapy post injury and surgery)
Other: REACT (emergency portals)IDT (discharge team)
Your induction process will include time being 'supernumerary', to allow you to settle into the environment, complete core training topics and get to know the hospital systems.
In addition, to support your learning and development, you will be allocated a Mentor who will provide a link throughout your rotations, complete your Personal Development Reviews (PDR) and oversee you through the Preceptorship process. On each rotation, you will also be allocated a supervisor.
Main duties of the job
This post is for a Rotational Occupational Therapist at UHCW NHS Trust, the rotations are for 6 months and provide opportunities for staff to consolidate theory into practice and to develop core skills in a variety of clinical settings. These include inpatients, outpatients, emergency departments and the discharge team.
The post holder will provide Occupational Therapy assessments, interventions, and discharge planning to promote, maintain, and restore functional abilities whilst considering the individuals' abilities, health, requirements, and environment.
The post holder will demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and team-working skills. The post holder will be expected to manage a caseload, plan, and undertake Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions, whilst demonstrating clear clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice, with support from their team and senior colleagues.
The post holder will actively engage to promote the role of Occupational Therapy and the development of Occupational Therapy provision.
The post holder will provide clinical support to less-experienced staff, as delegated by seniors.
Therapies are supported by the AHP Faculty who provide regular training sessions, alongside the team In-Service Training opportunities.

Main Duties
- To carry out assessments and treatments using a variety of modalities. This may include physical, cognitive, perceptual, and psychological interventions
- To evaluate and modify treatment plans in line with patient need
- To ensure accurate documentation and recording of all interventions and outcomes
- To hold responsibility for own caseload within defined area of the service, with Senior staff support
- To support patient flow through timely discharge planning and linking with community services
Clinical
- Hold responsibility for own caseload within a defined area of the service and eventually work without direct supervision
- Carry a clinical caseload of patients, assess, evaluate, and provide a detailed written treatment plan with patient centred goals working within ward / department areas, home and community settings as identified by Occupational Therapist
- Carry out treatment using a variety of modalities, this may include physical, cognitive, perceptual and psychological intervention, evaluating modifying and recording all interventions and outcomes
- Work in accordance with RCOT & HCPC rules of professional conduct and within local care pathways, policies and standards
- Professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of his/her own professional activities and to manage clinical risk within own caseload at all times, whilst remaining responsible to Team Leader/Clinical Specialist
- Responsible for own personal development, keeping up to date with occupational therapy practice in order to establish and maintain competence and fitness to practice as an Occupational Therapist. To maintain a professional evidence-based portfolio, meeting the requirements of the HCPC
- Review and reflect on own practice and performance and make effective use of professional and operational supervision and annual review undertaking supervision of others as agreed
- Complying with agreed development programmes to meet knowledge, skills and competency requirements
Leadership & Education
- Work as an autonomous member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to team discussions and influencing decisions about patient care programmes and service improvements
- Responsible for the supervision and written assessment of Occupational Therapy students on practice placement within the Trust
- As part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for allwe have created the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle; this involves a structured approach to removing waste and putting the patient first using a lean management system and methodologies. Our culture and ways of working reflect and embed the practices and methodologies of UHCWi. You are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others. Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a prerequisite for this post
Research
- Demonstrate a good understanding and application of national guidelines and legislation relating to health and social care in service provision
- Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate current research, apply to practice and disseminate findings at a local level
