Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the surgical bed capacity team within the surgical group. The group comprises of multiple specialities which are managed across the 9 ward areas caring for both elective and emergency patients. As an integral role to the group the successful candidate will support the operational and nursing team to manage capacity and flow throughout the ward areas from our Surgical Assessment Unit and our Elective pathways.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work across all adult surgical inpatient and day case services to support in identifying patients requiring admission and discharge.
The post holder must have excellent communication skills, IT competent, be able to work well under pressure and prioritise their work load. They will assist in the movement and flow of patients through the hospital supporting performance of elective and emergency pathways.
The post holder will act as a competent and integral part of the team, supporting the medical and nursing team in the flow of patients across the organisation from admission to discharge. Key responsibilities will include visiting the wards and departments post board rounds and liaising with key members of the multidisciplinary team to gain intelligence an actual or potential discharges and or barriers to discharges. The post holder will be able to utilise and update the various IT systems available in the Trust to support the smooth flow of patients across the organisation.

1.Support the operations team in meeting national targets for elective, emergency and cancer pathways.
2.Visit wards and clinical areas frequently, communicating effectively with staff to maintain good relationships.
3.Gain respect of and develop close working relationships with clinical and non-clinical staff.
4.Communicate and liaise with various departments, staff, and management teams.
5.Able to provide timely and accurate information regarding bed availability and discharge plans.
6.Able to communicate clearly both verbally and written.
7.Liaise with the surgical manager of the day, clinical site manager, and nursing teams to plan effective bed utilisation to create and maintain patient flow.
8.Assist with moving and transferring patients in line with the Trusts bed management policy.
9.Liaise with critical care areas to ensure patients highlighted are stepped down to base wards as early as possible and to ensure that critical care areas always have capacity.
10.Assist in the management of patient flow through working collaboratively across ED, wards, and departments and assist with the provision of effective bed utilisation.
11.Support flow out of Theatres and recovery areas to ensure the safety for post-operative patients and efficient use of staff and theatre time.
12.To support the Manager of the day on duty by escalating delays in patient discharges.
13.Liaise directly with the Patient Transport Services to ensure early collection of patients ready to be discharged.
14.Ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times in line with Trust policy.
15.Ensure the working environment is safe and all incidents are reported to the Clinical Capacity Manager or Clinical Site Manager at the earliest opportunity.
16.Recognise limitations in clinical skill and operational knowledge and undertake tasks or make decisions which are within the remit of the role.
17.To provide cover for bed capacity for sickness, annual leave and any other leave with senior clinical support
