This post will provide senior middle grade support to the Rheumatology outpatient, inpatient and daycase unit service at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust under the direction of the responsible Consultant Rheumatologists and Clinical Lead.
- This post joins the existing consultants, specialist nurses and the wider rheumatology team in the continued provision of our Rheumatology service in Coventry and Rugby.
- The successful candidate will be expected to take part in the rheumatology on call rota, together with existing consultants, with a frequency of 1:7
The appointee will support the current Rheumatology team, made up of 9 consultants and 6 specialist nurses and will be expected to undertake clinics at UHCW, City of Coventry and/or St. Cross Hospital in Rugby, as well as providing support to the day-case Unit and junior doctors. Whilst this post has a focus on General Rheumatology, we are looking for the appointee to have specific experience and interest in the following areas:
- To help develop the Osteoporosis service and
- To support the busy Connective Tissue disease/Vasculitis (CTD) services across outpatients, inpatients and day-case Unit
This will support the service development required in line with the outputs from it's GIRFT review in January 2023.

They will also provide professional supervision of more junior members of the team, including the teaching of nursing and medical staff as well as medical students.

The specialty doctor will need to function as a member of the multidisciplinary team and work with both the consultants and specialist nurses to provide the clinical care to patients attending the Department and to support the ongoing clinical work. Close liaison is also expected with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and primary care teams to maintain continuity of care. They will contribute to the development of our rheumatology service, both within the Trust and in the community.
Clinic templates can be scheduled for new patients only (6 new patients per clinic, depending on case mix), review clinics only (10-12 patients per clinic, again depending on case mix) or combined new/review clinics, with a maximum of 3 new patients and up to 8 follow ups. Templates will be reduced for specialist clinics where there are high proportions of patients with more complex needs. A standard operating procedure and technology exists to enable clinics to be delivered virtually, if appropriate and preferred.
Appointees will be expected to maintain close links with other medical and surgical specialties, as appropriate, and would be supported and encouraged to collaborate where this compliments their specialist interest in Osteoporosis and CTD. Support from senior colleagues will be available when required.
The successful candidate will be accountable for improving and complying with infection control practices.
