Job summary

Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services offer a range of diagnostics tests across a number of departments in the region. The Cellular Pathology service receives approximately 60,000 cases per year across 3 NHS Trusts; University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, George Eliot NHS Trust and South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust. The Histology laboratories are based at University Hospital Coventry and Warwick Hospital, with staff performing many histological techniques including dissection, microtomy, special staining, QC, and immunohistochemistry testing.

We are looking for a Consultant Healthcare Scientist to work with the Medical Consultants within the discipline and the scientific staff of the laboratory to provide a high quality, timely, reliable diagnostic Histology service.

You will work within the dissection team to assist Consultant Histopathologist's in specimen dissection. We are open to a range of Histopathology sub-specialities to be covered by this post, and so this will depend on your experience.

Main duties of the job

You will be regarded as an expert in your field and be able to work under your own initiative and referring to the Consultant Histopathologist as required.

The role involves the macroscopic description, dissection and block sampling of specimens that fall within normal limits the RCPath designation of category, A, B, C, D & E.

Your work with the Medical Consultants will include contributing to the Histopathology discussion at the multidisciplinary team meetings, providing expert opinion to ensure that patient treatments are appropriate and effective, giving expert opinion to inform decision-making as a Medical Consultant peer. You will use the departmental LIMS to enter a diagnostic report on all cases reviewed with a requirement to seek second opinions from clinical colleagues when needed or when cancer diagnosis is suspected.

You will have appropriate training and will be under supervision until fully qualified and signed off for independent reporting by a mentoring Pathologist.

Another key part of the role is being able to teach, train and supervise Biomedical Scientists (BMS) and junior medical staff in the dissection area.

In liaison with the Advanced BMSs and Dissections Leads in dissection, you will also ensure there is a timely workflow and assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.

To be eligible for the full Consultant Healthcare Scientist post, you must be a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist registered with the HCPC, possess a relevant higher degree e.g. MSc in Pathological Sciences and attained IBMS Diploma in Specimen Dissection or Equivalent . You will hold The Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath)/IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Histopathology Reporting. You will also have completed your post-qualification preceptorship (stage D) of at least 12 months and reporting 1500 surgical specimens to allow independent reporting sign-off by a Specialist Consultant Histopathologist with subsequent sign off-of training (CCT sign off).

Once you have completed your The Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath)/IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Histopathology Reporting (stage C) then you will become an 8b. Upon completion of the post-qualification preceptorship (stage D) of at least 12 months and reporting 1500 surgical specimens, you will then become an 8c Consultant Healthcare Scientist.
