Job summary

The post holder will assist the Head of R&D and research leads to promote and support clinical research supported by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW). Together with the R&D Director and Head of R&D, the Research Development Manager will play a vital role in the continuing development of the locally developed Research and Grant Portfolio. As well as being managerially responsible for R&D administrative staff, the post holder will provide day-to-day operational support to the R&D Director, Head of R&D and Management team and will be responsible for actioning any special projects at their request.

The post holder will lead on Research Development at UHCW by advising and assisting staff to produce high quality grant proposals and applications for funding to external bodies. In addition, be responsible and accountable for leading the research development team, delegating and overseeing tasks, undertaking mandatory requirements and providing learning and development opportunities.

The role includes supporting the Trust to develop research partnerships and collaborations, particularly with the Trust's academic partners and collaborations with industry.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be the first point of contract at the beginning of the research process and will agree with the clinical research lead the support requirements for each project.
  • Prepare proposals and applications to external funding bodies. In particular, contribute to the content of proposals to improve quality and ensure they conform to the guidelines and selection criteria of the appropriate funding agency. This includes providing accurate NHS costing in line with AcoRD, contributing text, providing comments on drafts, suggesting potential collaborators and negotiating sponsorship arrangements.
  • For successful grant applications, oversee the contracting process with the funder and partnership agreements with collaborators to ensure roles and responsibilities are understood and grant income schedules are clear.
  • Develop and establish research collaborations. Develop relationships to facilitate the interface between UHCW, the University of Warwick and Coventry University and other strategic partners including grant awarding bodies.
  • Provide effective leadership, supervision and line management of the R&D administration team and associated staff.
  • Work with local research leads to promote and encourage new research studies, attending and presenting at local meetings as required.
  • Contribute to the R&D Strategy and Trust Corporate Objectives, acting according to local Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.

  • Maximise opportunities for external income from commercial research by developing a responsive, efficient commercial trials service.
