Job summary

The post holder will provide direct support to the Maternity Services in coordinating, implementing, delivering and providing assurance against national and local standards including the Care Quality Commission's 5 core domains and standards.

The post will involve working closely with the Obstetric Clinical Governance Lead, Director of Midwifery, Women's and Children's Risk Manager and Group Clinical Director.

The post holder will be expected to lead in key areas of quality and assurance, including ensuring clinical accuracy of guidelines, patient information leaflets, audits, quality improvement projects, as well as supporting and monitoring the implementation of actions from audits and quality improvement (QI) projects.

The post will involve working with the Trust Quality and Patient Safety Team on various safety initiatives, linking with the Trust Clinical Effectiveness Department and supporting the Senior Midwifery Team in the delivery of the maternity quality standards.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will lead and manage, in conjunction with the above-named individuals and the Assurance Lead Midwife will:

  • Responsible for receiving and communicating complex information related to guidelines and audits and this will require good concentration skills to review and analyse data.
  • Implement and monitor actions from Audits, QI projects, incidents and perinatal mortality reviews
  • Ensure clinical accuracy of guidelines
  • Support and design QI projects to ensure that Maternity meets the Trust QI agenda
  • Engagement with peer reviews
  • Lead on the Maternity Incentive Scheme (MIS) to support the wider team to ensure compliance with each of the safety actions.
  • Engagement and involvement with the Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme (MatNeoSIP)
  • Engagement and involvement with the development and implementation of regional guidance

  • Provide leadership and expert advice on delivering key national and local quality priorities jointly with the Obstetric Clinical Governance Lead and Womens and Childrens Risk Manager.
  • Facilitate the design, production, prioritisation and allocation of the audit and QI programme to promote clinical excellence
  • Create and maintain close working relationships with all key stakeholders across maternity and the wider Trust to enable integration of Maternity governance arrangements throughout the wider hospital
  • In conjunction with the aims of the Maternity Risk Management Strategy, the post holder will support the clinical governance agenda by raising the profile of best clinical risk management practices to achieve improvements in client care and reduce adverse incidents
  • Ensure robust methods of evidence collection for CQC requirements, developing an action plan where gaps in evidence are identified
  • Support the Perinatal Mortality Review process, including being a member of the multidisciplinary panel, monitoring compliance against the latest version of MIS standards.

The post holder will:

  • Ensure that all care programmes are accurately documented and that the standard of record keeping reflects the NMC and Trust guidelines and standards.
  • Fulfil the role of a midwife as defined by the World Health Organisation and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Midwifery Rules and Code of Practice and reflect the Trust's guidelines, policies and standards of practice
  • Provide dynamic and visionary clinical leadership, giving advice and support to staff as required and acting as patients advocate at all times
  • Challenge traditional boundaries and introduce new ways of working if applicable
  • Ensure that midwifery practice is appropriate for each individual woman for whom care is provided
  • Be expected to plan and co-ordinate multi-disciplinary activities
  • Links and collaboration with the Practice Development Team, educationalists and other professional stakeholders in order to execute plans arising from QI methodologies
