This new post is part of the Trust's commitment to a first class tertiary cardiology service for Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond. While there is a commitment to the primary PCI on call rota, applicants with any additional sub-speciality interest are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a PFI hospital opened in July 2006. All equipment is automatically replaced on a five to seven year cycle, and this includes three state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheter Laboratories.
University Hospital provides tertiary cardiac services for just under 1 million people in Coventry & Warwickshire, and has a reputation for a very high quality revascularisation service at regional and national level.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Duties
The principal activities of the post will be:
- Participation, along with the existing cardiologists, in the provision of a full range of cardiac investigations and treatment at the Trust.
- Emphasis is placed on participation in the acute coronary intervention rota to deliver the 24 hour primary PCI service and a 7 day NSTEMI/ACS service.
- Supervision of the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospital, jointly with the other cardiologists.
- Appropriate close liaison with surgical colleagues in selection of cases and post operative care.
- Development of appropriate outcome measures to assess the effectiveness of the Cardiology service provided at University Hospital.
- Participation in the affairs of the Cardiac Department and the speciality of Cardiology.
- Supervision, teaching and training of junior medical staff, attached nursing staff and medical technical officers.
- Participation in a regular programme of clinical audit. Design and implementation of appropriate audit machinery to assess the provision, uptake and effectiveness of the services. This will include the hospital's care of patients with acute coronary syndromes and participation in the Royal College of Physicians' MINAP project.
- Undergraduate teaching of medical students who attend from the University of Warwick.

Job responsibilities
To provide, in collaboration with clinical colleagues, a comprehensive cardiac service to patients in the Coventry area. This will include ensuring that all appropriate waiting lists and waiting times are adhered to; that services are provided in an effective and efficient manner and that the principles of risk management and clinical governance are maintained at all times. To actively participate in the teaching and training of junior cardiologists and allied healthcare professionals. To support and innovate changes within the department.
Summary of the Cardiology Service
All Cardiology inpatient work is undertaken at University Hospital in Coventry.
- 10 bed Coronary Care Unit (all monitored)
- 24 bed Cardiology ward (for elective and lower risk acute admissions)
- 12 bed Cardiac Assessment Hub also used as day case facility
There are currently four Cardiac Catheter Laboratories on the Coventry site. Procedures include:
- coronary angiography
- left and right heart catheterisation
- coronary angioplasty and stenting
- rotablation
- TAVI
- septal myocardial ablation
- percutaneous closure of post infarct VSD
- pacemaker, ICD & CRT implantation
- full range of electrophysiology
The Department of Cardiac Investigations provides extensive non-invasive facilities for the hospital including stress echo, exercise treadmill testing, transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, ambulatory ECG and Blood Pressure monitoring, pacemaker & device clinics.
One stop rapid access chest pain, heart failure, general cardiology and pacemaker clinics are held at the hospital.
There is an active coronary rehabilitation programme, together with a community based programme for coronary prevention. The departmental research programme is supported by two full time research nurses as well as dedicated clinical fellow sessions.
The department of Cardiology has expanded rapidly and is one of the busiest centres in the West Midlands region. A 24 hour primary PCI service (approximately 400 of the total of 1000 PCI cases per year) has been in place since 2008.
Departmental Staffing Structure
There are twelve Consultant Cardiologists. There are four Cardiac Surgeons, and the unit prides itself on close working between Surgeons and Cardiologists. Patients are discussed at a weekly multidisciplinary meeting, and regular joint clinical governance meetings are held.
The work of the Cardiology Department is supported by the following junior medical staff:-
- 6 Specialist Registrars
- 6 Clinical Fellows
- 6 Senior House Officers
The new consultant will be supported by a Registrar and a Senior House Officer. Secretarial support, office accommodation and IT access/training will also be provided
