This is an exciting post designed to offer specialist training and experience in Upper GI surgery, for trainees around the time of completion of higher specialist training and looking for some extra training ahead of applying for consultant positions. UHCW is a modern facility with all surgical specialties represented on site. There are excellent educational facilities.
The post holder will occupy a key organisational role in the Upper GI team, which comprises 4 consultants, 5 middle grades, 2 CT grades, 2 FY1s and 5 ACPs. This post allows for developmentin skills in all areas of Upper GI surgery, including in major Upper GI cancer resection, laparoscopic upper GI benign work, and bariatrics. There are many opportunities for day case general surgery and upper GI endoscopy lists as well.
UHCW is one of the UK's busiest Major Trauma Centres and the acute take provides excellent emergency surgical exposure. The successful candidate will participate on the on-call rota as the senior Middle-Grade and will be expected to deal with the majority of an unselected acute General Surgical take.
UHCW has an established programme in benign Robotic Upper GI surgery, with imminent plans for robotic cancer resection work. The post-holder will have exposure to robotic surgery during their placement.
Main duties of the job
Day to day care of complex Upper GI & Bariatric patients
Attending theatre for training and assisting in all types of Upper GI/General surgery procedures.
Lead in preparation of patients and effective running of Upper GI lists.
Attend MDT meetings and co-ordinate care and list planning for oesophageal and gastric cancer patients
Support outpatient activity of the unit, as required
Perform audit of overall activity of the unit and supervise collection and presentation of mandatory morbidity and mortality data
The post holder will be accountable for improving and complying with infection control practices and independently operate (STU) to support the 'Hot Gall bladder' service. Post holder will be able to do Consultant on-call (under supervision) if required to cover sickness.

The Department of Surgery at UHCW NHS Trust has grown over the last few years, promoting sub-specialisation, in keeping with Department of Health and Royal Colleges guidelines. As aresult the traditionally aligned sub-specialities of Upper GI / Hepatobiliary-pancreato-biliary (HPB) have now separated into Oesophago-gastric and HPB, each has developed a specialty team distinct to its requirements.
The provision of upper GI services to the population served by the Arden Cancer Network and beyond encompasses both benign and malignant diseases. Over the last decade there has been a drive towards improving outcomes in Upper GI cancers. Several guidelines have been produced by various bodies in the UK, notably Improving Outcomes Guidance - IOG.

It is important that the post holder acquires all round experience of Upper GI surgery. This will be gained through supervised activities in outpatients, theatre, MDT meetings and the wards. The 4 consultants will be directly responsible for appraisal of progress and ensuring that this occurs.
Participation in local research activities is mandatory. The units activity is currently recorded and will enable the post holder to develop a thorough system of clinical audit.
Teaching
UHCW is a teaching hospital. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students as well as junior medical and non-medical staff.
