Job summary
The colorectal surgical department at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire has been performing robotic colorectal surgery for over four years performing over 130 cases. Two consultant surgeons (Mr C Evans and Mr A Bajwa) operate weekly using the da Vinci robot. The team is now a recognized national training centre and both Mr C Evans and Mr A Bajwa are both robotic proctors.
For the past two years there has been a robotic colorectal fellow attached to the department with the primary goal of training them in robotic surgery. There is regular access to the training simulator and with appropriate experience console time during robotic procedures.
Upon completion of the fellowship it is expected the trainee with be able to independently set up and perform basic robotic colorectal procedures. There are opportunities to be involved in national robotic training courses and robotic research projects.
Main duties of the job
As part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for all we have created the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle; this involves a structured approach to removing waste and putting the patient first using a lean management system and methodologies. Our culture and ways of working reflect and embed the practices and methodologies of UHCWi. You are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others. Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a pre requisite for this post.

The postholder is expected to work at Specialty Doctor level in General and Colorectal Surgery.
Clinical basic 40 hours per week. Ward work and ward rounds; theatre sessions; outpatient clinics; administrative work e.g. discharge summaries in the absence of Consultant, teaching junior staff
Official and unofficial nursing staff tutorials and ward rounds, nursing lectures.
General Surgical 1in18 on-call rota with prospective cover
Excellent facilities for clinical as well as laboratory based research, close lings with Biological Sciences Department at Warwick University.
Attend by invitation meetings of the Surgical Division and attendance at Audit.
The junior doctors accept that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant. This is agreed in consultation where practicable with his colleagues, both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the professions and the DSS that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and, in particular, that junior doctors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods on a regular basis.
The post holder will take responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices.
The post is not recognized by the appropriate Royal College of Postgraduate Training. The Clinical Sciences Building has a modern integrated post Graduate Centre.
There is an excellent library in the Clinical Sciences Building with many books / journals and the services of a full time librarian.
Courses for all examinations are held in Birmingham. The courses comprise of day release, half day release, evening course and day/multi day courses, for which study leave is normally granted (subject to terms and conditions of service) to those applicants wishing to attend courses held within the West Midlands Region.
