Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Unit at UHCW consists of three age specific Wards allowing the children and their families to thrive amongst their peers whilst being nursed in an environment designed specifically with their needs in mind. The department also houses a Level 2 Critical Care Unit (HDU), a Paediatric Medical Day Unit and Surgical Day Unit as well as a large Paediatric specific Outpatient Department and Children's Emergency Department.

We currently have vacancies in the following areas:
Ward 14 is our Adolescent Ward caring for young people aged 12-18 years, it is a 12 bedded Ward specialising in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. The Ward is supported by a team of CAMHs liaison nurses.
Ward 15 is our Infant Ward, caring for babies age 0-2. It is a 15-17 bedded Ward with an expertise in respiratory care, offering hiflow oxygen on the ward. The area is supported by an Infant feeding specialist Nurse. Paediatric Critical Care is based on the Ward and has 6-8 beds, staff working on Ward 15 will have the opportunity to gain experience in High Dependency care if this interests them.
Paediatric Critical care is a fully accredited Level 1 and 2 Critical Care Unit caring for children age 0-18 with a range of surgical and medical needs. The team can provide care for children with Tracheostomies, CPAP, BIPAP, as well as complex pain management utilising NCAs and Epidurals. The staffing structure is currently under expansion and they will soon be welcoming an Outreach team to offer additional support for the staff and patients.
Ward 16 is our Childrens Ward caring for children age 2-12. It is our biggest ward consisting of a 24 beds, specialising in Paediatric Oncology for children of all ages. The Ward is supported by an Oncology Specialist Team.
Paediatric Medical Day Unit/Surgical Day Unit. The units are open weekdays only 07:30-18:30 in PMDU & 07:30-20:30 in SDU. PMDU provides a range of care to children age 0-18 with both acute and chronic conditions, including chemotherapy, rheumatology infusions, blood transfusions, endocrine testing, hormone injections and blood testing. SDU provides pre and post operative care for children of all ages for a wide range of specialities, including ENT, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Plastics, Maxillo-facial and Dental.

Once in post within Paediatrics at UHCW we take great pride in providing a world class Supernumerary/Supervisory Induction programme meaning you are fully supported before you even begin your role. During this time you will spend time with one of our Paediatric Practice Educators, one of which is specific to Critical Care should this be your area of interest, together you will discuss your learning needs and a bespoke training package will be developed specific to your experience and needs.
On a daily basis you will go on to have the opportunity to work with our amazing MDT including our Paediatric Medical team, General Surgeons, Paediatric specific Orthopaedic team as well as other medical and surgical specialities. We work closely with our in house dieticians, SALT, physiotherapists and play specialist team. We also house a large team of Paediatric Specialist Nurses who not only support the wards but also hold a wide array of outpatient clinics such as Respiratory, Diabetic and Hemoglobinopathy to name a few. These teams working together enabling us to offer a holistic approach to our Nursing care.
Outside of the Trust the Unit has well established links with KIDS (Kids Intensive Care & Decision Support) based at Birmingham Children's Hospital. Each area has bespoke nurse development and training plans with the support of our experienced Paediatric Practice Education Team.
