Job summary
To support a highly specialised and comprehensive, evidence based, endoscopy pathway for patients referred with GI symptoms across the UHCW Trust endoscopy units (Coventry and Rugby sites). This will involve assessment and diagnosis of symptoms utilising clinical triage, virtual and face to face clinics, and diagnostic endoscopy.
The post holder will work in collaboration with the gastroenterology and endoscopy departments to provide the best possible service for patients accessing the service, within agreed protocols, guidelines and pathways for patients requiring clinical advice and treatments for lower GI symptoms and will be trained to develop skills in upper GI endoscopy.
On completion of training the grade will increase to 8a.
Main duties of the job
As an established Nurse Endoscopist able to perform lower GI procedures you will work in collaboration with the gastroenterology and endoscopy departments across both our University Hospital, Coventry and Hospital of St Cross, Rugby sites. Main duties of the job will:
- manage a caseload of patients, supporting patients their families and clinical staff throughout the diagnostic process
- model and provide clinical support for junior members of the team
- be independently competent in undertaking diagnostic endoscopy (Flexible sigmoidoscopy).
- collaborate with the management teams within the gastroenterology and endoscopy departments
- Participate and train in Upper GI procedures through JAG and HEE accredited training opportunities.

Job responsibilities
As an established Clinical Endoscopist competent in flexible sigmoidoscopy you will deliver education, supported with audit and research, the post holder will take personal responsibility for the setting of professional standards and the monitoring of performance against the agreed local and national standards for the Service, in collaboration with the management teams within the gastroenterology and endoscopy departments.
You will be trained in upper GI endoscopy as part of the role and potential to expand your lower GI skills.
The role involves working across multiple sites.
- To be competent in the delivery of lower GI endoscopy and train in upper GI endoscopy.
- The promotion of clinical excellence in his / her practice through the implementation of research evidence based care and NICE guidelines.
- Being responsible for the day to day function of their own caseload, assessing, implement ting and directing endoscopy cases. To include liaison with all members of the MDT, patients and their families, and in nurse/non-medical led endoscopy sessions.
- Work autonomously as a Clinical endoscopist to deliver a differential diagnostic GI endoscopy service including delivering life-changing diagnoses, initiating treatment, and breaking bad news. The option to develop therapeutic GI endoscopy could be discussed.
- Administer local anaesthetic and IV sedation to patients undergoing endoscopy in accordance with Trust policies and group protocols.
- Take endoscopic biopsies and request histopathology reports in order to form an accurate diagnosis.
- Establish safe practice in the delivery of a broad range of therapeutic endoscopic procedures including highly complex interventions. Provide accurate endoscopy reports to enable appropriate treatment and care.
- Refer patients to other Health care providers to ensure patient care is continued. Including independent referral for radiological intervention such as x-ray, CT and MRI.
- The establishment and maintenance of effective collaboration and co-operative relationships with other members of the multidisciplinary team, working towards the optimisation of high standards of care in endoscopy.
- To work in collaboration with partners across the local system, contributing to and developing system pathways for the benefit of patients referred via GI 2WW pathways.
- Provide practical guidelines for the treatment/management of patients including setting of policies and protocols that direct both medical and non-medical practice.
- Continue to provide Clinical excellence through his/her practice that remains up-to-date through training and mentorship.
- Develop and maintain an appropriate knowledge base of anatomy in order to distinguish between normal and abnormal endoscopy findings.
