Job summary

An extremely exciting opportunity has arisen for a Qualified Driving Instructor to join West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful post holder will deliver core driver training, as dictated by the Trusts Education & Training Strategy, plan and Training Days Analysis; with particular reference to the evaluation and testing of Trust staff

Main duties of the job

In addition, the successful applicant will manage the dynamic nature of driving instruction and the control required; preparing and presenting evidence of candidates suitability for courses, relevant training needs analysis and the provision of remedial training as appropriate.

The post holder will hold or be working towards the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) qualification and will also need to hold and attain the IHCD Ambulance Driving Instructor Qualification (or be working towards the equivalent diploma in emergency response ambulance driving instruction (DERADI) if not already held or IHCD Police conversion programme (if applicable). In addition the post will also require an Assessing Qualification or the development towards this.

Applicants must also have a full clean UK drivers licence showing full Category C1

If this position involves a regulated activity it will require an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check. The disclosure will, where appropriate to the role, include information against the Independent Safeguarding Authority barred lists for working with children, adults or both

Where a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check is required for the post, applicants are required to cover the cost of the check. The cost of £42.50 for an enhanced check is payable to our online provider at the time that the DBS application is submitted. Upon receipt of your DBS you will then be required to sign up to the DBS online update service.

Job responsibilities

1. Drive Trust vehicles safely complying with legal requirements and in accordance with Trust policy.

2. Demonstrate correct driving techniques to students ensuring compliance with High Speed Driver Training requirements and general road traffic law.

3. Instruct and coach students in the necessary practical skills, depending upon the level of the course, and ensure that the required skills are demonstrated in the students driving ability and in accordance with the authorising body.

4. Instruct students in the theoretical aspects of driving and ensure an understanding of the advanced driving techniques, and other relevant driving theory sessions.

5. Encourage individual learning by clear communication of learning points, the use of appropriate facilitation styles and effective use of learning aids during the session.

6. Encourage others to learn and develop, giving them clear and direct guidance and feedback on their performance.

7. Encourage and support staff, making sure they are motivated to achieve results.

8. Ensure that all students are aware of the required standards and encourage them to reach them.

9. Recognise any problems that a member of staff may be experiencing; assist them in identifying the cause and agree a suitable way forward, acting at all times in accordance with the Trusts policies.

10. Plan and design training and development sessions, to be taught both in the classroom and in the vehicle, that satisfy clearly defined learning needs, including appropriate learning methods and materials.

11. Prepare and deliver driver education sessions to diverse audiences, both inside and outside of the Trust, ensuring that you represent the values of the Trust.

12. Plan activities thoroughly for self and others; building milestones into plans.

13. Facilitate group discussion, ensuring equal participation of all involved, to enable the objectives to be met.

14. Provide specialist advice to colleagues, partners and external agencies, on the matter of driving standards or the subject of driving instruction, in compliance with the recommended guidelines and Trust policy.

15. Ensure that students are trained to the requirements of the Awarding Body and other regulatory bodies.

16. Liaise with the management team with regards to the booking and arrangement of driving tests, both internally and externally.

17. Using specialist knowledge and judgement relating to driving instruction undertake driving assessments against the agreed standards of competence, and make recommendations to the candidates suitability to drive Trust vehicles safely, and in accordance with the regulations.

18. Attend vehicle collisions or be involved with the investigation of vehicle collisions involving Trust vehicles and, where appropriate, give advice, guidance and a recommended course of action when dealing with those involved in the collision.

19. Keep up to date with all aspects of current legislation in the driving arena, ensuring that this is used to inform, practice and work with, Trust personnel.

20. Prepare for and actively contribute to meetings, ensuring decisions and actions are communicated to the appropriate personnel.

21. Ensure that all matters relating to teaching are communicated in a prompt, efficient manner, and With Trust policy in mind.

22. Work effectively as a team member and build relationships with internal and external groups to actively help others to achieve team and individual goals.

23. Communicate all needs, instructions and decisions clearly; adapting the style of communication to meet the needs of the audience.

24. Accept responsibility for self and others. Take responsibility for managing situations and problems. Lead by example, showing a commitment and a determination to succeed. Continue to learn and develop.

25. Demonstrate an understanding of legislation and regulations which apply to driving instruction and road risk and comply with them.

26. Complete dynamic risk assessment of all work mechanisms within the driving arena, taking steps to implement appropriate risk reduction measures.

27. Show reliability and resilience in difficult circumstances. Remain calm and confident, and respond logically and decisively in difficult situations.

28. Identify any nature of illness or injury and provide the necessary first aid treatment in accordance with approved procedures.

29. To treat everyone with whom you come into contact with dignity and respect.
