Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and professional individual to work in the University Hospitals Haematology and Coagulation laboratories, within the Derriford Combined Laboratory.

We are primarily looking for candidates to provide skilled technical support within the Haematology and Coagulation laboratories, carrying out a wide range of pre-analytical and analytical procedures under defined competency and supervision.

The post holder performs routine and standardised specimen processing, runs and maintains a range of automated Haematology and Coagulation analysers, undertakes quality control activities, and supports technical troubleshooting within a defined scope of practice. The post holder will hold responsibility for managing and coordinating band 2 staff on a day to day basis.

The role ensures safe, timely delivery of diagnostic Haematology service to acute, emergency, critical care and community patients. The post holder contributes to the maintenance of ISO 15189:2022 standards, service improvement and staff development within the section.

Main duties of the job

  1. The post holder will work together with senior staff and support staff in the Haematology and Coagulation Laboratory to produce a timely, high quality, accurate and cost-effective service.
  2. The post holder will ensure the timely processing of patient samples, serving all those patients attending PHNT, PCTs representing 100 General Practices and specialist assays referred to us from other Trusts within the Peninsula. The department performs 4.7 million tests annually and employs 123 staff.

Perform routine automated Full Blood Count (FBC) analyses using multi-parameter haematology analysers.

Perform routine Coagulation assays (PT/INR, APTT, fibrinogen, Ddimer) using automated coagulation analysers.

Perform manual or semi-automated tasks where required:

o Capillary/venous sample preparation

o Blood film preparation or basic sample categorisation for BMS review (no morphological assessment); does not undertake morphological interpretation.

o Tube mixes, dilutions, reagent prep

Maintain an understanding of sample requirements, interferences (e.g., clots, haemolysis), flags and analyser-generated alerts.

Undertake defined, protocolbased firstline troubleshooting (e.g., reagent changes, simple blockages, routine cleaning).

  • Escalate all unresolved QC or calibration issues to BMS/Section Lead
  • Does not provide morphological, clinical or interpretative comment.

2. PreAnalytical & Specimen Handling

Receive, triage and prepare a wide variety of Haematology and Coagulation samples, ensuring suitability, stability and correct anticoagulant.

Identify and resolve basic sample errors (e.g., insufficient volume, wrong tube, clotting, mislabelling) within defined SOP limits.

Ensure correct prioritisation of urgent, ED, cancer, paediatric and critical care samples.

Participate in blood film preparation workflows as appropriate.

Handle, transport and store specimens in line with SOPs and Health & Safety Regulations (COSHH, Control of Infection).
