Job summary

This is a new role to join the team as a junior member of staff in the start of their career. The physiology team is a dynamic growing team that is now spread out over 2 sites, the main department chest clinic and the new Dartmoor building where sleep apnoea clinics are being held. The job will require technical scientific skills in performing a range of physiological measurements over a range of patients across multiple disciplines and specialties. To be professional and welcoming with all interactions and provide a supportive role within the team.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

We are hoping to employ an applicant to work with a growing team of physiologists, clinical scientist and assistant practitioner within the pulmonary function and sleep unit. The main duties will be to perform a range of physiological measurements including PFT's, 6 minute walks, sleep investigation and provision of CPAP equipment to newly diagnosed people with sleep apnoea. To support the daily operations within the service and perform continual development within your profession.

Job responsibilities

1. To be responsible for the completion and self-management of daily clinic lists of routine and more specialised lung function tests in the lung function laboratory. This should include performing oximetry, spirometry, reversibility testing, transfer factor, body plethysmography, mouth pressures, sniff pressures, six minute walking test, Mannitol challenge, hypoxic challenge.

2. Be able and familiar to use many types and makes of spirometer

3. To ensure all equipment is calibrated at the appropriate time and maintain good hygiene in both the lung function and applicable equipment within the chest clinic.

4. To assist in the provision of routine and more specialised sleep studies.

5. When required, to set up and download routine and more specialised sleep studies, including screening oximetry, TOSCATM,NOXand ApneaLink, validate multi-channel sleep studies for review of senior physiologist or senior medic.

6. To perform accurate and reproducible measurements in accordance with the standards and protocols of lung function, which are in line with national standards

7. To check and advise patients on good inhaler technique.

8. Help troubleshoot technical problems relating to lung function and sleep equipment in absence of senior staff.

9. To provide support for any research undertaken within the lung function and sleep departments as directed by line manager.

10. Maintain strict patient and departmental confidentiality at all times.

11. Comply with any other duties that the chief clinical physiologist may delegate.
