Job summary
Derriford Hospital forms part of the Southwest Deanery advanced training programme in Cardiothoracic surgery. Successful graduates from the programme have gone on to international fellowships, won multiple accolades including the Parker and Edwards medals; Ethicon and AstraZeneca fellowships and have been successfully appointed to UK consultant posts.
Consultants in the division continue to act as examiners and three are McCormack medallists. All consultants are committed and engaged with the electronic surgical curriculum pathway. The successful candidate will
benefit from all of the educational opportunities and resources afforded within the training
programme including a supporting educational bursary.
The successful applicant will spend the year as two six month attachments within the Cardiothoracic Surgery service exposed to (1) Adult cardiac surgical workload which includes: complex Major aortic reconstructive surgery; Transcatheter valve intervention; hybrid AF ablation surgery; port-access mitral surgery and minimally invasive aortic valve surgery as well as other aspects of cardiac surgery. This is complemented by (2) surgical Thoracic experience in open and minimally-invasive lung resection; included VATS and Robotic lung resection surgery. They will be expected to function at a high clinical level within the service and practice individually when appropriate.

When not participating in direct clinical care, research or teaching, the successful candidate will be supported in their pursuit of other complementary professional development activities.
On-call commitment: 1 in 10 non-residential second on-call rota in the cardiothoracic unit, together with a specialist anaesthetic registrar, with a basic surgical trainee/ANP on the campus first on-call. The successful candidate will share equal responsibilities with the existing fellow registrars / trainees on the higher cardiothoraic surgical rotation programme.
