Job responsibilities
- Primarily undertake radiographic duties in any of the CT scanners of Derriford Hospital and at the Plymouth CDC (Opening 2026), ensuring the high standards of radiographic quality and patient care are maintained, and delivered in a timely manner. Additionally undertake radiographic duties in any other radiographic or clinical areas of Derriford Hospital commensurate with current clinical skills.
- To be responsible for the patient whilst in your care. To assess the patients condition and adapt technique accordingly. To communicate highly complex information. Where appropriate to inform relatives and carers when necessary of the procedure being undertaken.
- Analyse complex tasks or situations requiring interpretation or comparison of a range of options. Possess specialist skills for assessing acute and other patient conditions, calculation of injection doses and exposure parameters. Adapt these to complex cases.
- As a senior radiographer you will be expected to be proactive in your work, taking responsibility wherever you are working if the modality leads are not present and supervising junior staff to ensure the department is working safely and efficiently.
- To empathise and reassure patients who are worried, anxious or reluctant to undergo the procedure by providing thoughtful and well constructed responses to their questions. Patient groups will regularly include learning disabilities, those with cancer or dementia.
- Be competent in all CT specialist techniques and in the use of all specialist equipment used in your modality, as well as routine plain film techniques. Use highly developed physical skills to provide images of diagnostic quality in a timely manner. Be able to accurately position patients with minimum discomfort to facilitate accurate diagnostic images without the need for repeats.
- Plan and prioritise own and section workload. Be able to manage the pressures of accommodating emergency/trauma work in addition to planned sessions.
- Be able to assist and advise both specialists and non-specialists in matters pertaining to your modality. Using specialist skills, knowledge and professional judgement when required.
- As a senior and specialist radiographer, make recommendations on clinical practice to modality superintendent or lead consultant, and assist in the implementation of any change.
- Assess information on X-ray requests to ensure it is relevant and can be justified under IR(ME)R 2018.
- You are expected to interpret clinical information to support the requested examination.
- To authorise under protocol, agreed CT requests.
- You will work to agreed protocols, but where the patients clinical needs require modification of an examination you will be aware of this and communicate with the practitioner to determine a more suitable examination.
- Assess the Radiation risk to the patient and ensure it is kept as low as reasonably practicable (the ALARP principle), and assess any additional risks involved within your modality. Know how to adapt technique accordingly.
