Job summary
University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPNT) is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine to join our dynamic and expanding Respiratory Medicine Department based at Derriford Hospital.
This is a substantive 10 PA replacement post, providing an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic physician to contribute to one of the largest and most diverse respiratory departments in the South-West Peninsula. The post arises following the departure of a colleague and will maintain delivery of inpatient and outpatient respiratory services, ensuring the continued provision of high-quality, patient-centred care.
We welcome applicants with a defined sub-specialty interest--particularly in TB, COPD, complex pulmonary infection, interstitial lung disease, or pulmonary hypertension--although all areas of expertise will be considered. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a bespoke job plan that complements existing services and aligns with their own clinical and academic interests.
Flexible and less-than-full-time working arrangements, including job sharing, are fully supported.
Main duties of the job
- Provide specialist care for patients with respiratory disease across inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and procedural lists.
- Participate in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota, including weekend and evening duties.
- Lead and contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, ward rounds, and specialty radiology discussions.
- Undertake general and sub-specialist outpatient clinics, bronchoscopy sessions, and inpatient reviews.
- Supervise and support junior medical staff, specialty trainees, advanced clinical practitioners, and allied health professionals.
- Contribute actively to teaching for undergraduate students (University of Plymouth Peninsula Medical School) and postgraduate trainees.
- Engage in clinical audit, quality improvement, service development, and governance activities.
- Participate in departmental research and innovation, with opportunities to develop an academic portfolio.
- Support and contribute to the development of integrated respiratory care pathways across hospital and community settings.
