Clinical Engineering Mechanical Services Assistant.

The Clinical Engineering department at Derriford hospital is responsible for the reporting, management and maintenance of 40,000 medical devices. Clinical Engineering provides our Trust and other customers with medical device leadership, expertise and governance for the whole life cycle of their devices, through proactive and responsive teams.

Clinical Engineering at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is seeking to appoint into our Mechanical Services Team to support in various functions: performing commissioning, decommissioning, decontamination, booking in, returning and collecting medical devices/equipment. Supporting existing Technicians, Technical Inspectors and Engineers, developing new skills, knowledge and education in a achievable, progressive role.

The successful applicant will engage with and actively participate to completion, the Clinical Engineering training scheme, which includes educationally the Healthcare Engineering Specialist Technician, Level 3 Course - under the Government's apprenticeship scheme and to build a portfolio of developing knowledge, experience and competencies towards fulfilling the departments work commitment and supporting evidence-based progression to Technical Inspector within the Mechanical Team.

Success in that qualification will further lead to a Technician role and other development opportunities on successful completion of key milestones, practical, technical and educational.

Main duties of the job

Works under supervision and as directed by Team Leader/Training Supervisor

Engages with the Clinical Engineering training scheme at the appropriate level when required

Assists with fulfilling mechanical team workload objectives. Provides assistance to all Clinical Engineering teams. Equipment types to be worked on inc. Wheelchairs, electrical and mechanical Plinths, Specialist Patient Trolleys, Hospital Beds and a range of electro-mechanical devices.

Works to build up a baseline of equipment and process competencies

Job description

Job responsibilities

Accepts requests for medical device repair and service from within and outside the Trust appropriately progressing high priority work.

Logs into and uses the Trusts Medical Devices Database to record all repair and service requests in accordance with Quality System.

Receives patients and other visitors to Clinical Engineering with due regard for their safety in potentially dangerous environment.

Performs corrective and planned preventative maintenance under close supervision on a range of medical devices following written instructions.

Performs acceptance, performance and safety checks under close supervision on new equipment following written instructions.

Maintains under supervision, service schedules, records scientific and technical documentation in accordance with Quality System and Trusts Medical Devices Database.

Rotates through all Clinical Engineering Teams to improve breadth of experience and to assist in building own competencies.

Understands, works and complies with the Quality System, bringing to the attention of the Team Leader any non-compliance.

Supports continual improvement of Clinical Engineering processes through participation in Quality System audits and acts as an auditor when required

Orders appropriate spare parts, complying with Quality System and understands the stock control system

Ensures that personal and general test equipment is within calibration dates, maintained to acceptable and professional standards and takes responsibility for all tools and equipment within their care.

Participates in group meetings and team briefings with the Head of Clinical Engineering and others as required.

Generates income for the Trust through participating in external customer contract work.

Provides assistance to other colleagues within Clinical Engineering and assists in the Medical Equipment Library as required.

Ensures main workshop facilities are kept clear and well-ordered to make the most efficient use of space and resources and that the mechanical workshop, store areas and trust lease vehicles are kept in a tidy condition.

Takes appropriate precautions in the work environment, where there could be exposure to hazards of mechanical, optical, electrical, radiological, biological and chemical natures.

Takes appropriate precautions when decontaminating medical devices found to be contaminated with bodily and chemical substances.

Works close to patients on wards and outpatient departments.

Works close to patients in Intensive Care Units throughout the Trust.

Works close to patients in Theatres while operations are taking place.

Performs under close supervision, safety testing to BS EN 60601 and 62353 Safety Standards for Medical Devices and acceptance testing to Managing Medical Devices April 2015 MHRA standard.

Performs under close supervision diagnostic and fault finding procedures on medical equipment.
