Job summary

The British Antarctic Survey, part of the Natural Environment Research Council / UKRI is responsible for the UK's scientific research in Antarctica. The survey's medical unit is based in Plymouth, and University Hospital's Plymouth NHS Trust. Our doctors must be a fully registered medical practitioner, at least 2yrs + post qualification. If you are currently in training, some Deaneries/Specialities allow successful applicants to keep their training numbers and view BASMU time as out of programme experience (OOPE). Appointments are in the range of 9-24 months depending on location and operational / logistic requirements. This entails 6 months training in Plymouth.

Following training in the UK you will be responsible for the health care of all personnel on one of the research stations or ships, reporting to the Senior Medical Officer in Plymouth where supervision and advice is available on a 24 hour basis via telemedicine links. The complete programme of training, clinical responsibility and research is designed to enable doctors to obtain a Certificate, Diploma or Master of Science degree in Remote and Global Health.

You must be physically fit for Antarctic deployments. To be suitable, you will likely enjoy outdoor activities, have a sense of adventure and be willing to spend a long period overseas within a small community. Doctors develop communication and interpersonal skills and expertise in unusual areas of medicine. Standard UK work permit regulations apply.

Main duties of the job

Clinical care of all those staff that are present on the station or ship for which the doctor is responsible.

Dealing with clinical emergency and keeping patients stable until evacuation in cases for escalated care needs.

Clinicians will be expected to lead first aid trained staff to support medical emergency.

Routine consults with staff for medical and emotional/psychological needs.

Patient records keeping, uploading digitised images and other associated records. Monthly reporting and attendance of routine meetings such as clinical governance meetings.

Dental care for deployed staff including mid-winter checks ups, as appropriate

Routine checks, QA and maintenance tasks of clinical equipment.

Management of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and dental supplies

Ensuring the integrity of medical provisions & first aid equipment for field use and medical emergency response.

Inventory and resupply orders, including entry into database.

Clinicians will support the training of BAS staff (first aid) in the pre deployment phase and continue that through enhancement and familiarisation training within deployment.

Clinical decision making with be fully supported by BASMU Consultants at UHP.

Doctors will likely pursue their own research efforts as part of further study , whilst deployed

Other duties in support of station or ship running as requested by BAS and supportable within clinical workloads.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical care of all those staff that are present on the station or ship for which the doctor is responsible. This includes treatments, ongoing consultation and follow up, dialogue with Seniors / specialists at UHP. The prescribing & administration of pharmaceuticals and dressing wounds and other aspects of patient care.

Routine medical/Occ Health tasks like vaccination, health monitoring for things like diving.

Clinicians will be expected to lead first aid trained staff to support medical emergency. The active care will need co-ordination of supporting first aid volunteers and in some case round the clock care needs, including basic nursing care, monitoring and welfare.

Routine consults with staff for medical and emotional/psychological needs. This is within the frame of isolation and remote working , where needs can become magnified by patient worries and concerns and under the spotlight of a very tight knit community.

Patient records keeping, uploading digitised images and other associated records. Monthly reporting and attendance of routine meetings such as clinical governance meetings. This includes recording of meta data that help BASMU to analyse incidents and look at trends in medical events and incidents that lead to injury.

Dental care for deployed staff including mid-winter checks ups, as appropriate. Dental care includes promoting good dental hygiene and preventative advice.

Routine checks, QA and maintenance tasks of clinical equipment. This includes instrument calibration and maintenance to ensure analytical and precision equipment is functioning properly. It also includes simple things like ensuring batteries are changed, power is cycled, first aid points are filled with in date supplies, deployed equipment is checked and refurbished to be serviceable and in date.

Management of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and dental supplies. Keeping stock organised according to systems of work and keeping station first responders aware of where the necessary supplies are available from.
