Cardiothoracic Theatre Senior Healthcare Assistant

Job summary

To assist the registered practitioner to provide a high standard of evidence based patient care within the Cardiothoracic Theatre Complex, by participating in clinical and non-clinical duties.

To assist the registered practitioner to implement care delivery according to patient care needs, as part of the multi-disciplinary Theatre Team.

To work in collaboration with staff in other areas of the Directorate and Trust to ensure a seamless service for patients.

Main duties of the job

Care Delivery

  • Undertake clinical and non-clinical duties and assume responsibility for carrying out elements of care, for which they have received appropriate training, under the guidance and direction of a registered Theatre practitioner.
  • Follow correct manual handling policies and procedures during the daily movement of heavy equipment, instrumentation and beds to and from the wards, and theatre complex, including the medical equipment library.
  • Assist with the safe transfer of patients to and from the Cardiothoracic Theatre Complex.

When assuming the role of the Circulating Practitioner:

  • Assist the registered practitioner to maintain the seamless running of the operating list by ensuring the daily checking and preparation of the Theatre environment and equipment required to carry out the days planned clinical procedures.
  • Assist in the delivery of quality care to the unconscious patient, with the effective utilisation of locally agreed care pathways.
  • Assist with completing accurate and detailed documentation of individualised care delivery.
  • Participate in the accurate accounting of all disposable and non-disposable instrumentation, before, during and after a surgical procedure according to departmental policies.

  • Participate in the cleaning of theatre areas inline with control of infection policies.
  • Responsible for the correct preparation of the post-operative Cardiothoracic beds.
  • Prepare and restock 02 and C02 cylinders on a daily basis.
  • Assist with stock labelling, ordering and re-stocking on a daily basis, whilst adhering to manual handling policy and procedures.
  • Ensure correct labelling, handing and transportation of patient specimens according to Trust policy.
  • Transport blood products, notes etc from wards and other departments within the hospital, in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Undertake relevant departmental training programmes, designed to develop the individuals clinical skills, enabling them to participate as a key member of the emergency on call team.
  • Awareness of local, national and professional policies and guidelines relevant to the sphere of responsibility.
  • Assist new staff members regarding working arrangements, policy and strategy within the theatre complex, directorate and Trust.
  • Participate in training/acting as mentor to new General Support Assistants/ Health Care Assistants.

  • Have an awareness of radiation safety Lasering and Stenting
  • Attend annual Trust updates
  • To participate in training and development as identified in Appraisals

  • To participate in the development and implementation of Unit policy and nursing strategies.
  • To be familiar with and adhere to Trust and Departmental policies and procedures mindful of responsibilities to self, colleagues and patients.
  • Give effective support to the multi-disciplinary team when assuming the role of the Circulating practitioner, under the supervision of the registered practitioner.
  • Assist the registered practitioner in rapidly changing emergency situations within the theatre and ward environments, requiring a high degree of professionalism and clinical competence.
  • Participate in the HCA/GSA on-call rota, utilising knowledge and experience to assist the registered practitioner in the safe and effective delivery of care to patients receiving emergency treatment out of hours. 12 hour on call overnight and 24 hour weekend days.
