University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

The closing date is 03 July 2025

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a proficient, innovative ANNP to join our established proactive team with a designated Senior ANNP Lead and an established career development pathway.

University Hospitals Plymouth hosts the Network Neonatal Unit for the Southwest Peninsula, providing non-surgical intensive care and SONAR south, the transport services for Devon and Cornwall. The unit has 14 intensive/high dependency cots, 8 special care cots and 18 cots in the adjoining Transitional Care Ward supporting a 7 day/week Neonatal Outreach Service.

The successful candidate will undertake advanced clinical care within the maternity and neonatal departments with the opportunity to develop their transport skills. As experienced senior nurses the ANNPs promote nurse-led initiatives, develop individual and team objectives and play a key role in service development.

The Unit supports the MSc Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner programme, which has been successfully developed in partnership with the University of Plymouth. This contemporary curriculum has facilitated the recruitment and training of Enhanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ENNP), developing ways to support nursing and medical staff in providing neonatal care pathways; with the potential to develop into the ANNP role.

Main duties of the job

1. Assess, differentially diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate individual treatment interventions for patients by virtue of expert clinical judgement and close liaison with members of the MDT.

2. Use expertise and decision-making skills to inform clinical reasoning approaches when dealing with differentiated and undifferentiated individual presentations and complex situations, synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate, evidence-based judgements and/or diagnoses.

3. Initiate, evaluate and modify a range of interventions which may include prescribing medicines, therapies, lifestyle advice and care.

4. Exercise professional judgement to manage risk appropriately, especially where there may be complex and unpredictable events and supporting teams to do likewise to ensure safety of individuals, families and carers.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
