Job summary

Your base clinical work will be at Derriford ED. The department sees a full range of ED work, except for ophthalmic emergencies, which are mostly seen in the Royal Eye Infirmary. The department has close links with the Medical, Surgical and Children's admission units as well as the Intensive Care Unit.

There are a minimum of two middle tier doctors on the shopfloor throughout the 24-hour period.

You will be expected to work on the middle grade tier in the Department and provide the relevant expertise and experience necessary to ensure the efficient primary management of emergency cases. You will be required to work within a multi-disciplinary team and work alongside other team members to manage the department workload. You will also be expected to provide supervision to the junior members of the team. This means you will have at least 3 years' experience following completion of your Foundation Years (currently working at an ST3+ level), at least one year of which will be in Emergency Medicine.

You will be expected to undertake full clinical duties including the immediate care of critically ill patients attending the Emergency Department, as well as patients presenting with both major and minor illness and injuries. The care will include initial resuscitation where appropriate, diagnosis, management and the treatment, referral and discharge.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

The post-holder's clinical duties will sit within the middle tier (full shift) rota. The appointee will be required to play an active role in the supervision of junior doctors working within the department as well as seeing, assessing and treating patients. The duties will include teaching sessions and audit.

You will be expected to follow the various guidelines and protocols issued in the department. In the case of major trauma cases, cardiac arrests and critically ill patients attending the department, the post holder will be expected to act in a team leadership role, following appropriate life support guidelines. Post holders would be expected to hold up to date certification in ALS (European Resus council), ATLS (Royal College of Surgeons) or European Trauma Course (ETC) and to gain Advanced Paediatric Life Support (ALSG) if not already undertaken.

Teaching

The postholder will also participate in formal and situational teaching of junior clinicians and nursing staff within the department.
