Job summary

The Primrose Breast Unit are looking for an enthusiastic Female Radiographic Helper* to join the Breast Imaging team. The Breast Unit is a purpose-built facility and provides breast symptomatic and NHS Breast Screening services. Imaging facilities comprise of 2 mammography rooms, a small field prone biopsy table and vacuum assisted biopsy device, and 3 ultrasound rooms.

You will be required to provide support to patients during breast imaging procedures and assist clinicians undertaking image guided breast biopsy and localisation procedures. You will be also required to prepare breast screening paperwork for reporting.

Main duties of the job

This is a high volume cancer service providing numerous breast interventions, eg ultrasound and X-ray guided breast and axillary biopsy, abscess and cyst treatment/drainage, pre-operative wire localisation, vacuum excision of breast lesions, and marker clip insertion into cancers prior to chemotherapy.

Main purpose :

To provide emotional and other support for patients during intimate and potentially distressing breast ultrasound examinations and interventional procedures to exclude or diagnose breast cancer.

To safely and efficiently assist the clincian during image-guided breast interventions, ensuring that haemostasis and sterility is maintained. After the intervention, the Clinician leaves the room and the post-holder then works independently and is responsible for the application of pressure to the intervention site, to prevent bruising , for applying a suitable dressing (including pressure dressing,) and for safe discharge of the patient. This is under the indirect supervision of the clincian; the post-holder independently makes the decision whether medical review is required pre discharge.

To prepare screening paperwork for reporting, following national NHS Breast Screening Programme and local guidelines to ensure a robust Right Results process.

Job responsibilities

To co-ordinate and oversee safe and efficient patient flow across the imaging side of the unit, especially during the busy screening assessment and one-stop clinics, to optimise capacity and minimise delays. Involves co-ordinating the activity of the Imaging Clinician.

To use keyboard and data skills to accurately register and book in patients on the Computerised Radiology Information System (CRIS), adding additional examinations/information as required and ensuring that data/alarms held are correct and completed in a timely manner.

To ensure correct patient details are highlighted on the ultrasound machine

To prepare ultrasound room and equipment in preparation for clinics and between patients.

To collect patients from the waiting room for their breast ultrasound/intervention and ensure correct patient identification as per Trust policy.

To assist with undressing/dressing and transfer to the imaging examination couch, when required, as per Trust manual handling protocols; assistance of mechanical aids occasionally required.

To act as a chaperone when required ensuring that the patients dignity is protected. Patients undergoing breast imaging need to be dealt with in a sensitive & empathetic manner due to the intimate nature of the examination.

To assist Clinician with breast ultrasound and a wide range of image-guided interventional procedures.

To prepare sterile equipment trolley for breast interventions as per departmental and Trust ANTT policies.

To safely and efficiently assist the Consultant Radiologist/Consultant Radiographer during image-guided breast interventions, ensuring that haemostasis and sterility is maintained. After the intervention, the Clinician leaves the room and the post-holder then works independently and is responsible for the application of pressure to the intervention site, to prevent bruising / haematoma formation, for applying a suitable dressing (including pressure dressing, if the post-holder deems required) and for safe discharge of the patient.
