Job summary

The Ultrasound Department has an exciting opportunity to recruit a Senior Ultrasound Imaging Care Assistant (ICA) (band 3) who will be supporting the team of ICAs within the Ultrasound service and deputising for the Ultrasound ICA Team Leader.

The Ultrasound service aims to deliver 1000 scans per week from rooms based in Derriford Hospital and other locations off site. We provide a service which extends into the evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

The Senior Ultrasound ICA will be expected to support the Team Leader in management of ICA team to support daily operational flow for inpatient and outpatient Ultrasound services, on site and off site. The post holder will be expected to be in departmental mainly during the weekdays, although there may be a need to work some weekends and bank holidays to support the service.

There should be cross cover between the Senior Ultrasound ICA and the Team Leader to be present at the daily morning huddle and link in appropriately with Imaging Production Board. The post holder is required to work closely with the Ultrasound team and the wider team in Imaging.

Flexible working patterns can be supported if they fit in with service needs. Weekend working is excepted.

Main duties of the job

o To act as Senior ICA in Ultrasound and assist the Ultrasound ICA Team Leader in providing support for the ICAs.o To deputise for the Ultrasound ICA Team Leader.o To provide a support service within the Ultrasound Department/Imaging Directorate by supervising and coordinating the ICAs to facilitate the throughput of patients attending the Ultrasound department so as to optimise the use of resources and to minimise delay.o To provide support and collaborate with for the wider ICA team in Imaging when required.o Proactively respond to the changing requirements of the service on a daily basis under the direction of the Ultrasound and service line management teams.o To provide leadership at daily huddles for Ultrasound ICA team.o To contribute to daily Imaging Production Board meetings.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Job responsibilities

    • Support the ICA team, deputise for the Ultrasound ICA Team Leader and assist the Team Leader with line management responsibility, regular staff meetings and recruitment of ICAs
    • Accompanying patients to and from the scan room, providing advice to the patient on the correct way to change for their examination if required and where necessary assist with undressing and dressing.

    • Assist the Ultrasound ICA Team Leader with rota management to organise Ultrasound ICAs across range of ultrasound scan rooms within Derriford Hospital and peripheral sites, across weekdays and weekends. This requires an understanding if the needs of the service as well as an understanding of the capabilities of the ICA, particularly when there is staff sickness and absence to maintain adequate service provision.
    • To be a mentor and support every new member of ICA team through local induction to ensure that each ICA is trained to the required standard for ultrasound service delivery and maintain the competency record for ICA team. This encompasses various safety aspects required to maintain health and safety of both staff and patients.
    • To have a good understanding of inpatient flow in Ultrasound and be able to stand in as ultrasound inpatient coordinator, when required.

    Support ICA team with ordering varies stock items.

    To get the patient ready for ultrasound examination appropriately when patient is in the scan room.

    To assist Radiographers/Sonographers/Registrars/Radiologists during patient examination as required using manual handling skills & mechanical aids when appropriate.

    To ensure the scan rooms are clean, tidy and well stocked according to the requirements of each room at all times.

    To be familiar with imaging procedures of all modalities in order to be able to explain them to patients of all ages & abilities, carers & relatives & report any concerns to a Radiographer.

    To provide support for anxious, emotional, frightened & terminally ill patients of all ages & their relatives.

    In the absence of the inpatient co-ordinator provide this role by assessing the clinical urgency of the patient, co-ordinate with the wards and input the tasks in the portering system, synbiotix.
