Job summary
This is an exciting time in Ortho-geriatrics as we are starting with our colleagues in Healthcare of the Elderly, Major Trauma, and the Emergency Department to develop a Frailty Trauma service. Our aim is to expand the model of Orthogeriatric care to routinely include review of older patients admitted through the Major Trauma Centre pathway with non-ambulatory fragility fractures and other traumatic injuries. The postholder will be in an ideal position to participate in this development and pilot models of service delivery in order to identify how best this improves assessment and clinical care for this often frail and complex group of patients.
Main duties of the job
Liaise with Orthopaedic staff regarding elderly patients with Fractured Neck of Femur and other Fragility Fractures/Trauma attending the daily Orthopaedic Trauma meeting when possible.
Provide Ortho-geriatric care including comprehensive geriatric assessment to all Neck of Femur patients and when possible older Frailty Trauma in the Orthopaedic Directorate.
Provide support and supervision to the Orthogeriatric SHO, and junior Orthopaedic staff when appropriate.
Liaise with Orthopaedic team to enable timely surgery.
Liaise with Anaesthetic team where appropriate.
Attend weekly Health Care of the Elderly meetings to maintain close working and educational development.
Liaise with families and carers, documenting discussions.
Attend daily ward MDT to coordinate and document discharge planning, rehabilitation progress and work towards set estimated discharge dates.
Arrange and attend family meetings where necessary to improve communication, discharge planning and management of patients with complex issues requiring case conference.

There is no on call or weekend commitment, however a flexibility to provide cover on Public Holidays is supported and would be reimbursed by way of a day in lieu within the calendar year for annual leave.

- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- To have completed two years of foundation year training or equivalent
- Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date

- Additional related qualifications, eg intercalated degree, BSc, BA, BMedSci or equivalent
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- At least one year's experience working in acute Geriatric Medicine or Orthogeriatrics above the level of Foundation Year training

- Additional clinical experience working in Healthcare of the Elderly, orthogeriatrics and other acute medical posts
