An enhanced Neurosurgical & Critical Care OT team has been established and a flexible, enthusiastic and motivated individual is required to work within the team across the Neurosurgical & ICU at Derriford Hospital. The post holder will join a friendly and committed group of Therapists and work as part of a MDT in an Acute Teaching Hospital & Major Trauma Centre.
The Occupational Therapy Department is committed to Continued Professional Development and involves all grades of staff in its In-Service Training programmes.
Post holder is professionally and legally accountable for his/her own action, working with minimal supervision. The post holder is professionally and legally accountable for work delegated to assistant staff and students.
This post is part of a 7-day working rota within the OT Department, which will include weekends and bank holidays.
This post may become part of a Band 6 rotation in the future across Neuro wards and the Major Trauma ward.

Main duties of the job
Perform a Specialist Occupational Therapist role to provide a comprehensive service to the patients referred, including Neurosurgery and Critical care who require multi-disciplinary input. This includes carrying out a range of functional and cognitive assessments.
Be part of an interdependent multidisciplinary team, ensuring that Occupational Therapy input is an integral part of the patient's overall care and discharge.
The Team consists of a variety of staff at Bands 7, 6, 5, 3 and this post.
This team receives referrals directly from the Multidisciplinary Team and is responsible for 'pulling' appropriate referrals into the service.
Post holder provides comprehensive assessment, treatment and evaluation of all inpatients referred on the critical care and neurosurgical wards.
Post holder assists the Team Leader in the day-to-day management of the wider Team, providing support, supervision and allocation of work to the Band 5 OTs, and Technical Instructors. The post holder will also undertake appraisal and clinical supervision of specified staff within the team.
To deputise for the Team Leader when necessary.
Patients seen present with a wide range of complex and highly complex acute and non acute neurological deficits with potentially long-term needs and disabilities.
The Post holder will have a delegated remit of Clinical Governance and teaching activities to undertake and develop within the team, e.g. audits, contributing to in service training, etc.

- Ensure the patients, relatives and those the therapist comes into contact with are aware of the role of the Occupational Therapist and components of the Occupational Therapy treatment programme.
- Obtain informed consent from the patient, and work within the current legal framework for patients who lack capacity to consent, prior to commencing any treatment.
- Select from a wide range of standardised and non-standardised assessments to assess and aid diagnosis of cognitive, perceptual, behavioural, physical and social functioning of the patients referred. This includes, but is not limited to social environmental interview, cognitive & perceptual tests (OCS, ACE III, CAMs, LOTCA, MOCA, BADS, etc), personal care assessments, kitchen assessments, feeding assessments.
- Make reliable interpretations of the assessment results, in order to inform other professionals in the diagnosis and management of the patients. Also to guide the Occupational Therapy treatment plan, and for the recommendation of the discharge destination/placement including completion of referrals for specialist and non specialist input.
- Plan, deliver and review treatment programmes in close liaison with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, patients, carers and family in accordance with any consent given. Addressing areas such as psychosocial needs and functional abilities.
- Carry out environmental home assessments as required. Assess the patient carrying out functional skills to maximise independent living, arranging equipment provision, adaptations and support services as required. Assess for disability access and safety, also ensuring access to community resources and assessing carer needs.
- Assess for and provide aids and adaptive equipment to increase / enable independent function, teaching compensatory techniques as required. These include but are not limited to feeding, dressing, leisure activities and employment. Responsible for providing information and instruction for the safe use of the items provided.
- Raise requisitions for minor adaptation on behalf of Social Services and OT equipment on behalf of the OT Department, Derriford Hospital.
- Assess for wheelchairs, specialist seating and positioning needs treating as appropriate, referring on to wheelchair and seating clinics as required.
- Responsible to plan, deliver and review treatment programmes in close liaison with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, patients, carers and family in accordance with any consent given.
