Job summary

The purpose of this post is to develop learning opportunities by providing teaching and support for students on the Peninsula Medical School BMBS Programme during their Neurology placements. The post will predominantly provide teaching and support to year 3 and 4 medical students but may also provide teaching for year 5 students. The post holder will work with Dr O'Gara and the Clinical Liaison Team in the Medical School to support teaching in Neurology. This will include teaching groups of 3 to 5 students on Neurology placements in a variety of clinical areas, assessing clinical competencies, providing tutorials, delivering clinical skills teaching and developing teaching resources. Other activities related to the smooth running of the pathway weeks and placement blocks may be included. Teaching will be during academic termtime and as such the post holder is required to take annual leave during the medical student holidays.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role will include:

    • o Acting as key clinical liaison for medical students during their clinical pathway placements.

      o Coordinating and organising teaching for Neurology Pathway Weeks. Liaising with Clinical Teacher Leads and clinical teams to improve delivery of teaching.

      o Demonstrating and teaching practical & clinical skills within both the clinical environment and simulated teaching scenarios

      o Leading clinical teaching within clinical pathway weeks and developing local departmental teaching opportunities for students.

      o Liaison with nurses, junior doctors, other health care providers, patients, relatives as well as senior medical staff within the Neurology department to support the successful facilitation of the BMBS programme.

      o Undertaking formal teaching both face to face and using remote platforms, when required. This could include the delivery of tutorials, lectures, Clinical Skills and simulation sessions.

      o Attending ward rounds and multi-disciplinary rounds as required to support the delivery of the medical education undergraduate teaching programme.

      o Supporting quality assurance arrangements for clinical teaching within departments, as directed by the Pathway Leads / Hospital Sub Dean.

      o Attending, when required, monthly Clinical Teacher Leads Meeting and other Medical School Working Groups.

The successful applicants will all be key members of the Undergraduate Medical Education Team and will take responsibility for supporting clinical learning within the clinical environment

Successful post holders may have the option to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCert) or equivalent appropriate Postgraduate Certificate (e.g. Simulation and Patient Safety or Health Leadership and Management), which is funded up to a maximum of £3,500 by the Peninsula Medical School. Generally, this will be done through the University of Plymouth.

Doctors who are enthusiastic about working within Medical Education and delivering excellent teaching opportunities to students will be rewarded with a wide and rewarding medical educational and clinical teaching experience. Post holders will also be given an honorary title from the University of Plymouth.
