Job summary
The Planned Investigation Unit (PIU) is open from 07:30 to 20:00, Monday to Friday consisting of eight trolleys and a multi-function treatment room where respiratory procedures are undertaken, along with the nurse led greater occipital nerve injection clinic and telephone pre assessment clinics.
A new PIU extension has been agreed and work will commence in October 2023. This area will comprise of 5 therapy chairs enabling an additional facility to support the recovery of clinic patients and an infusion bay.
This dynamic and diverse day case unit supports the investigations and treatments of numerous trust wide specialities. We deliver a wide variety of therapeutic infusions and treatments alongside diagnostic and interventional procedures.
The team pride themselves on delivering excellent patient care and are always keen to extend their knowledge and skill set. As we are predominately a nurse led unit the environment facilitates individuals to be at the forefront of change.

- Provide and deliver a high standard of nursing care recognising and meeting the specific needs of patients.
- Prioritise own workload under the supervision of the registered nurse
- Escorting of both sedated and un-sedated patients to Interventional Radiology or other Departments under the direction of the registered nurse (when deemed competent)
- To carry out clinical observations on patients, recognising, recording and reporting all changes in patients condition to senior staff.
- To support maintenance of fluid balance and dietary charts, recognising, recording and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.
- To support nutritional needs of patients by assisting with feeding and drinking, reporting on concerns about dietary intake to senior staff.
- To assist in the care of maintaining skin integrity over pressure points, recognising and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.
- To recognise the importance of health education and teaching of patients and carers and inform senior staff where this might be required.
- Document and sign for all observations and care given with counter signature from a Registered Practitioner.
- To maintain his/her own professional development, attending courses/further training to enhance and optimise his/her role within the work area.

- oNVQ level 3 in Health & Social Care or HCA UHP Level 3 or definitive evidence of working towards - 75% completed (or equivalent transferable qualification)
- OR o Demonstrable equivalent experience (NVQ Level 3 equivalent) as a Healthcare Assistant in a Band 2 clinical role and agree to undertake the HCA UHP L3 course. Willing to undertake a competency-based assessment at interview.
