Job summary

An exciting Senior Nursing opportunity has arisen within Neonatal Services at University Hospital's Plymouth NHS Trust.

We are looking to recruit a dynamic, competent, and forward-thinking Neonatal Nurse Consultant to work within our service and collaboratively with the Perinatal Team within the Hospital Trust and the South West and nationally with stakeholders in neonatal care.

University Hospitals Plymouth hosts the Network Neonatal Unit for the South West Peninsula, providing non-surgical intensive care and transport services for Devon and Cornwall, circa 14,000 births. The unit has 14 intensive/high dependency cots, 8 special care and 18 cots in the adjoining Transitional Care Ward supporting a 7 day/week Neonatal Outreach Service.

Neonatal Services sits within the Women's and Children's Care Group in the Hospital Trust and regionally within the South West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (ODN). Plymouth

The successful candidate will be a key member of the Neonatal Senior Leadership Quadrumvirate and work collaboratively with the Care Group Quadrumvirate, the South West Perinatal Networks and nationally with the Neonatal Nurses Association (NNA), British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) and NHSE

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

Main duties of the job

Fulfil a clear Strategic Clinical Leadership role for improving the care and services to neonates and their families within the Hospital Trust in collaboration with the perinatal teams.

Lead on safety and governance for the neonatal service.

Work collaboratively with NHS England (NHSE) in delivering the commissioned Specialist Critical Care Neonatal Service and SoNar South Transport Service.

Lead on the implementation and development of local and national strategies for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in re-defining, shaping and transforming the processes required to care for neonates and their families throughout University Hospital's Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPNT), and on to the local community setting, and the Southwest Peninsula.

Represent the Trust in multi-agency working towards improving services for neonates across intensive / high dependency care, special / transitional care, outreach, and neonatal transport services, working with partner organisations in a multi-agency approach.

Work as an expert practitioner in the care of neonates, demonstrating a sound knowledge of issues relating to specialist and advanced neonatal clinical practice. Develop a clinical framework which provides for their physical, developmental, and social needs and the psychological needs of the parents and family.

Develop and deliver a Family Integrated Care (FICare) service to ensure optimum quality, safety, enhanced maternal mental health and parental satisfaction.

Maintain FiCARE locally and collaborate with the regional care coordinators linking services to support the physical and developmental needs of the neonate, thus supporting the national Maternity and Neonatal health Safety Collaborative (MatNeoSIP) program, enhancing neonatal and maternal mental health.

Collaborate with members of the Care Group to identify and support work across Service Lines which supports improvement in the quality and efficiency of care being delivered.

Evaluate and act on Trust wide initiatives, including the Family & Friends Test and procedures which maintain standards of clinical care and support the wider development of the Trust.

Demonstrate high visibility and gold standards of clinical practice to support neonates and their families through integrated working with the clinical team

Develop and champion innovations in practice for care of the neonate, ensuring that these are evidence- based, supported on implementation and evaluated to provide improved neonate and family experiences.

Facilitate patient flow and repatriation throughout the ODN to validate prompt and timely transfer/discharge from hospital, with clear plans for the ongoing care and decisions required.
