Job summary

Main duties of the job

Trust doctors required from August 2023 to 1 August 2024 (or to February 2024 if you would like a shorter appointment)

Clinical

  1. To provide day to day in-patient care.
  2. To carry out a daily ward round and to accompany Senior Staff ward rounds.
  3. To maintain in-patient notes, admissions, follow-up and discharges, unless already completed by Consultants.
  4. To deal with emergencies immediately they are admitted and inform Specialist Registrar on duty.
  5. To prepare discharge notes to GPs
  6. To prepare operation lists, obtain patient's consent for surgery, mark correct limb and notify Anaesthetist. To assist Senior Staff in theatre.

Current rota

Normal working day 0800-1730

On-call full shift 0800-2030 Mon - Thurs, Fri - Sun

Night full shift 2000-0830 Mon - Thurs, Fri-Sun

Weekend ward cover 0800-1730

Part of the role is to cover ward duties and we have introduced 2 x 5 day week blocks of working on wards within each rota cycle (1xShaugh Ward, 1xSharp Ward) to improve continuity of care and training planning. The expectation, when possible, will be to swap these weeks with colleagues when wanting to take leave but this is not currently formally prospectively covered.

Teaching/Audit

Teaching takes place currently on Monday mornings, Thursday lunchtime and Fridays.

You will have the opportunity to gain experience in the peri-operative management of these patients on the ward with a daily senior (Middle grade or Consultant) ward round. Elective operating covers all aspects of Orthopaedics, and a new theatre suite is currently being built. This post will include the ward care of elective patients from all Orthopaedic sub specialities including paediatrics. Some 2,000 trauma cases are admitted annually. Two dedicated trauma theatres run Monday to Friday with daily trauma lists also over both weekend days. A further three weekly paediatric trauma lists are also provided in a dedicated paediatric surgical unit. There is the opportunity to attend weekend trauma lists when on call.

Clinics and Facilities

In addition to a dedicated trauma theatre, there is a fracture clinic with plaster room and a registrars library with computers and anatomical models. This compliments an excellent postgraduate library and medical centre on the Hospital site.
