Job summary

The post-holder will manage a department with approximately 53wte, managing non-medical staff including Scientific, Technical, Administrative, Medical Secretaries, Clerical and Support staff via Section Leads.

The post-holder will work closely with the Laboratory Director, along with other medical staff and senior laboratory staff within the department, to ensure that a timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective service.

The post-holder will ensure the timely processing of approximately 35,000 biological requests per annum that have been submitted for Histological and Cytological opinion, and the deceased patients that pass through the mortuary.

To advise the Service Line Director, Service Line Manager and Laboratory Director whilst contributing to the strategic development of all pathology services. To deputise for the Service Line Manager in their absence.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the delivery and development of a proactive, high quality pathology service. Working closely with the Laboratory Director on all operational issues.Responsible for managing all pathology resources, allocated to a budget of £3 million, are used effectively and efficiently whilst adhering to Trust SFIs, and delivering agreed cost improvements allocated by the Trust. To be the budget holder for the department, but communicate all aspects of budget planning and financial management to the Laboratory Director. To form part of the senior management team, within pathology, contributing to the strategic development of services. Responsible for the operational delivery of all local and national targets relating to service standards and turnaround times. The post-holder is responsible for ensuring that all accreditation standards set by national bodies, including UKAS, are met whilst delivering a safe service for the staff and its users. The post-holder is responsible for effective liaison between the paediatric Pathology Service Provider and the Trust. Take overall responsibility for H&S, Quality and Personnel issues for all non-medical staff in Cellular Pathology, including Neuropathology, Cytology and the Mortuary.
