Job summary

The appointed Physician Associate will provide expert advice to patients, carers and colleagues, assistance to O and G consultants, middle grade and junior doctors in the provision of a high-quality elective and emergency O and G service at University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust. They will work as part of a wider multi-professional team including midwives, nurse specialists, nurses and other healthcare professionals contributing to the care of O and G patients.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to participate in various aspects of the care pathway as deemed appropriate based on previous levels of experience at both Physician Associate level and that of the specialty.

The post holder will work closely with junior doctors in the delivery of emergency and elective care for patients attending the hospital but this will be mutually agreed after discussion with their designated consultant and other departmental managers.

Job responsibilities

  • Take part in all the treatment (as allowed within current regulations) and assessment services of the department as and when requested, and work within the policies and procedures of the organisation.
  • Take history and perform physical examination of a patient including female pelvic examination. Record the history and examination in the medical records (as per departmental and hospital standards of care).
  • Perform other tasks, not prohibited by law in which the physician associate has been trained and is proficient to perform. Perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, subject to training and experience.
  • Work collaboratively with the clinical team, including consultants, junior doctors, nursing and midwifery staff, therapy staff etc to encourage and ensure good working relationships.
  • Support the assessment of patients who present acutely unwell to the unit and the ongoing assessment of inpatients.
  • Deliver supervised out-patient clinics.
  • To communicate with GPs and other health professionals the outcome of clinical appointments in a timely fashion.
  • To contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines.
  • To fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork.
  • Part of the on-call SHO rota on a rotational basis.
  • Support and contribute to timely discharge planning.
  • Be responsible for a recognised caseload of patients in the day-to-day management of care.
