Job summary

This post is a key role within our small rheumatology service at Derriford Hospital and will support the delivery of our inpatient caseload and outpatient work, in particular for urgent enquiries from GPs and other clinicians in managing their patients. You will play a key role in the education and support to our medical students and junior colleagues.

This Trust Doctor StR Higher (Registrar in Rheumatology) job is re-advertised, due to a glitch stopping some applicants being able to apply.

Main duties of the job

The ideal candidate will have a good working knowledge of rheumatology and will be able to apply this knowledge to care for our patients, fully supported by the senior rheumatology clinical team.

You will be a team player and engage with our excellent nursing team providing support with prescriptions and other queries and also to use their extensive knowledge to support your development too.

The appointee will undertake general rheumatology clinics weekly.

The appointee will participate in the training and teaching of junior medical staff, help with the continuing professional development of other members of the clinical team, and other post-graduate educational activities.

The appointee will participate in audit, continuing medical education and professional development, and annual appraisal. If the defined rheumatology clinical service commitments are delivered there will be opportunities for the appointee to attend specialist clinics.

The appointee will support the nurse specialist team regarding prescriptions for disease modifying drugs and clinical queries within their scope of knowledge.

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • At least four years full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in rheumatology or as a fixed term specialty trainee in rheumatology, or: Shall have equivalent experience and competencies in Rheumatology from other medical grades including from overseas.

Desirable

  • MRCP or equivalent higher degree (MD or PhD)
  • ALS

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk - Demonstrable evidence of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors, learning from errors
  • Able to conduct clinical audit with evidence of regular completion of audits, and demonstration of action on outcomes if appropriate
  • Evidence of experience and ability in teaching, especially to medical students.

Desirable

  • Experience in specialist rheumatology (vasculitis, connective tissue disease, osteoporosis)
  • ICHGP certificate, Experience in clinical trial recruitment and day to day running
