Job summary

A very exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated staff nurse to join our growing nursing team in a new, purpose build 24 bedded elective orthopaedic unit.

The new unit will be situated on the University Hospitals Plymouth - Derriford Site, outside of Maternity. The new unit is currently under construction with a planned open date for Summer 2023. The unit will have its own dedicated theatres that are also under construction on level 2.

The new orthopaedic unit will lead the way with delivering innovative and excellent care. We will have 2 areas within our unit, a second stage recovery and a ward area with a higher level observation for the more complex orthopaedic procedures.

We will support you to develop as a staff nurse and learn new skills to carry with you on your nursing journey and enhance your knowledge within orthopaedics.

You must have a passion for delivering kind and compassionate care and be willing to learn and develop within your role. Main duties of the job

Responsible for co-ordinating and delivering effective quality nursing care following a patient centred model of practice and ensuring area of work runs smoothly and efficiently.

To provide clinical expertise and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Supervision and direction of junior nursing staff, healthcare assistants and learners.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

Meavy ward is a 12 bedded unit which provide care for adult patients in need of a joint replacement from across the Peninsula.

Assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating of individual patients needs based on evidence. This includes all aspects of care from admission to discharge.

Reporting and documenting all relevant nursing/patient needs, communicating changes with other health care professionals in the multi-disciplinary team with ongoing responsibility for patient care as they occur.

Promoting and delivering health education within the clinical area and advise patient, family, and others in health promotion issues. Engage; interact with carers/family encouraging them to be actively involved in patients care, planning as outlined in the ward/unit philosophy.

Demonstrating and undertaking evidence-based practice playing an active part in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care

Supervising, assessing, mentoring and supporting junior Registered Nurses and Health Care Professionals including bank and agency staff in the clinical setting.

Increasing the level of knowledge and skills within the Ward/Directorate through sharing best practice and supporting others to develop their professional abilities.

Implementing and sharing good infection control practice.

Undertaking manual handling assessments and ensuring identified actions are met.

Day to day direct supervision of team of patients and staff.

Maintaining, sharing and continually developing an in depth specialist knowledge of nursing practice relevant to the individual clinical area.

Assisting other clinical areas within the Trust if the clinical situation or staffing levels demand.

Undertaking manual handling assessments and ensuring identified actions are met.
