Job summary
The Department provides General surgical services to King's Mill Hospital and Newark Hospital and there are two dedicated inpatient wards at King's Mill to cover all aspects of General surgery. There is also a dedicated Day Case Unit and separate Surgical Assessment Unit which provides 24 hour care for surgical patients admitted as emergencies. There are several dedicated General surgical theatres and one dedicated emergency theatre shared with all other surgical specialties.
This is a committed and enthusiastic department with all Consultants providing surgical cover and a special interest, as well as general surgery. The General surgical Consultants have a good working relationship with the Gastroenterology Consultants, and with our surgical colleagues at the regional centres for gastro-oesophageal and hepatobiliary/pancreatic cancer (Nottingham University Hospitals) and colorectal surgery at NUH.
The spectrum of specialist Colorectal surgery provided locally is comprehensive, including laparoscopic and endo -anal surgery. We are aiming to set up a robotic service in the near future and hope this will develop with the appointment of new specialist surgeon. This appointment is a replacement post and the appointee will ideally have JAG accreditation for colonoscopies.
The Colorectal multi-disciplinary team includes oncology support from NUH, 3 specialist nurses, straight to test nurses, stoma nurses and cancer pathway support.
Main duties of the job
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients
- o share best practice and promote team working within the General Surgical department and GI multidisciplinary team
- Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit
- To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)
