Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the pharmacy team delivering aseptic pharmacy services to Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust. The aseptic unit is responsible for providing safe injectable chemotherapy and monoclonal antibodies for both inpatients and outpatients within cancer services, rheumatology, and gastroenterology. It also provides intravenous nutrition for both adults and neonates, as well as other ad hoc products for ophthalmology, respiratory, and pediatrics. No previous experience within aseptic services is necessary. You will be trained to act as a professional lead for the day-to-day supervision of the aseptic unit. This will enable you to develop your understanding and experience in multiple areas, ranging from screening, final release, environmental monitoring, training, and quality management.

This job opportunity will allow you to develop all the skills you need to progress within your career, whether in aseptic services or not, and will provide a balance of clinical ward-based work and technical services. You will be encouraged to undertake a prescribing qualification, adding to the large pool of pharmacist prescribers who practice within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

You will work closely with the gastroenterology team, nutrition nurses, and dieticians and participate in the Trust's parenteral team, undertaking clinical reviews of all parenteral patients.

The post holder will collaborate with the oncology and hematology consultants and specialist nurses to ensure the safe and timely provision of chemotherapy, utilizing an electronic prescribing system.

Your role will involve contributing to the development and delivery of validations within the aseptic unit, including taking responsibility for organizing and delivering training for all trainee pharmacists rotating through aseptic pharmacy services. During this time, you will have the opportunity to develop your line management and appraisal skills, either by supervising a band 6 pharmacist or acting as a tutor for a trainee pharmacist. Your management skills will further develop with opportunities to review and update procedures and worksheets within the unit, with a focus on safety and accuracy.

You will also collaborate closely with the High-Cost Drugs team to help manage the introduction of any new chemotherapy or monoclonal antibodies. This may involve presenting information on new agents to the Trust Drugs and Therapeutics Committee.

We are seeking someone who is eager to develop their skills and knowledge and has the confidence to make the most of all learning opportunities.
