King's College Hospital is seeking a dynamic, energetic Consultant with a special interest in Haemato-Oncology Diagnostics and Lymphoid Malignancies based at our Denmark Hill site.
The successful candidate will work within the multi-disciplinary Southeast Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SE-HMDS) team with a primary focus on reporting, interpreting and further developing haemato-oncology diagnostics. The post holder will work closely with the other six SE-HMDS Consultants in Haematology and Histopathology and share the reporting duties for haematological malignancies diagnostics. This will include reporting aspirates, interpreting immunophenotyping and genomics results and authorisation of integrated reports combining morphology, histopathology, immunophenotyping, cytogenetics and molecular results. The post holder will represent the HMDS in local and regional cancer MDT meetings. The post holder will play an active role in leadership, integration and development of the diagnostic repertoires and quality assurance of the laboratories, while having a significant commitment to training of junior medical and laboratory staff. Research is also actively encouraged
Main duties of the job
To provide a first class integrated diagnostic malignant haematopathology service in keeping with the recommendations of the NICE IOG document.
Work in conjunction with colleagues in SE-HMDS to drive the development and implementation of cellular pathology techniques and technologies appropriate for an ultra-specialist service.
Attend multidisciplinary meetings as a core member as requested by the clinical lead in haemato-oncology.
Together with the other members of consultant staff, contribute to clinical services within the department
Shared responsibility with the other consultant staff members for providing 24-hour, 7 day a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis (on call commitment currently 1:22)
Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.

Since its inception in 2006, and the appointment of a consultant in diagnostic haemato-oncology in 2007, there has been a rapid expansion in both the scope and volume of work
undertaken, with a doubling of the number of samples processed (see table below). The department is comprehensively equipped with three diagnostic flow cytometers, capillary DNA sequencing, microarray analysis and quantitative PCR. Several new tests have been introduced with an increasing emphasis on molecular diagnostics, and this trend will continue as new technology is introduced. As part of the NHSE Genomics strategy, a widening repertoire of test directory compliant panel tests have been developed and implemented covering lymphoid, plasma cell, myeloid and myeloproliferative neoplasms. The SE-HMDS provides genomic services for the South-East Genomic Laboratory Hub.
In addition to providing a specialised diagnostic service to the SE sector, the SE-HMDS a central role in teaching and research within Kings Health Partners. Specialist Registrars have an attachment with the SE-HMDS and gain experience of modern diagnostic haematology that is not be provided elsewhere in the network. There are several research groups in the department as well as a Human Tissue Authority (HTA) approved haemato-oncology Tissue Bank and, subject to appropriate regulatory approvals, these groups work closely with the diagnostic service. The SE-HMDS is thus central to the tripartite mission of Kings Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre namely, excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.The successful applicant will also have a specialised clinical interest in a disease area to complement existing service interests and requirements of the department.This is a full-time post providing 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) with a current on-call commitment of 1:22.The successful applicant will ensure that standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit, job planning and appraisal as well as the application of evidence-based research and national guidelines. The successful applicant must work flexibly and efficiently with colleagues and comply with the Trusts business strategy.All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trusts sites as required by the service.
