King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Senior Clinical Fellow in HPB Medicine

The closing date is 26 February 2026

Job summary

The Liver ITU provides the most comprehensive service for the management of critically ill patients with liver disease (acute liver failure, decompensate chronic liver disease, hepatobilary surgery, trauma and liver transplantation) and has a strong reputation for innovative research into novel clinical treatments such as extracorporeal liver support. The ITU facilities are housed in a 15-bed area in close proximity to the liver wards, theatres and laboratories.

The ward services have recently expanded to provide inpatient beds for 58 patients covering all aspects of liver disease. Patients are admitted as local, regional, supra-regional or international referrals. Supporting the ward-based service is a dedicated outpatient service, providing daily clinics to all patient groups.

Endoscopic services also form part of the total package of care, with over 2,000 endoscopies and 700 ERCPs performed annually on locally and nationally referred patients. Endoscopic ultrasound is also offered.

Main duties of the job

The focus of this fellowship is HPB medicine and provides a thorough, holistic approach to patient care. Involvement in research projects is encouraged, as is participation in audit activities. Attendance at UK meetings (BSG) and international meetings (UEGW, DDW, etc.) can be supported and is encouraged.

Acceptance of an offer of this post will be deemed to include acceptance of changes, including remuneration, in accordance with the provisions of the agreement and circular (MD 1/92).

Medical clearance, and in some circumstances an examination, is required prior to appointment.

The post is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff and the General Whitley Council.

Although these fellows' appointments are not accredited for training the appointees will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the department and the hospital. Appointees will have a named educational supervisor and be expected to undergo annual review and appraisal and will be provided with equal training opportunities as the local trainees. Annual leave and study leave is commensurate with other post foundation doctors. The experience and opportunities offered would be excellent experience for applicants planning a career in Liver Medicine.
