Job summary

The post-holder will play a key role in supporting the effective day-to-day operation of the MRI department, working closely with radiographers and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.

Duties will include undertaking specialist tasks such as intravenous (IV) cannulation, assisting with clinical procedures, and providing general support to radiographers during imaging examinations. The role also involves a range of administrative and clerical responsibilities, including patient preparation, liaising with porters, managing procurement needs, and contributing to the overall efficiency of the department.

A strong emphasis is placed on maintaining high standards of professionalism, ensuring patient dignity, confidentiality, and a courteous approach at all times.

Main duties of the job

  • Welcome and receive patients, staff, and visitors to the CT / MRI department in a kind, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Respond to patient and staff enquiries, providing clear and helpful information as required.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues across all levels, both within and outside the department, to ensure the smooth running of the service.
  • Provide patients, including children, with clear and accurate information about their examinations and the necessary preparations.
  • Collaborate with radiographers and other team members to support diagnostic procedures and patient care.
  • Check and update patient personal details and demographics, ensuring accurate appointment check-in.
  • Direct patients to the appropriate waiting areas and provide clear instructions regarding their preparation (e.g. changing into gowns, drinking water).
  • Monitor patients in waiting areas, responding to needs promptly and informing clinical staff when further assistance is required.
  • Liaise with superintendent radiographers and consultants regarding workflow, protocol queries, and imaging requests.
  • Coordinate with ward staff to arrange inpatient examinations at mutually convenient times.

  • Complete patient safety checklists (e.g. general, colon, cardiac, pregnancy, MRI safety) thoroughly and accurately, escalating any identified concerns to the appropriate staff member.

Planning and Organisational skills

  • Assist with the safe and efficient movement of patients within the department and during imaging examinations.
  • Help coordinate services by liaising with wards and other departments to ensure the timely flow of patients and continuity of care.
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels of consumables to support uninterrupted service delivery.
  • Retrieve patient records and other necessary documentation as required to support clinical workflows.

Physical skills and Effort
