King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Senior Clinical Fellow - Colorectal

The closing date is 27 November 2025

Job summary

The Department of Colorectal Surgery at King's deals with the diagnosis and management of all benign and malignant colonic and anorectal conditions as part of a multi-disciplinary team involving Gastroenterologists, Radiologists, Oncologists, Pathologists, Palliative Care, Urogynaecologists and Urologists.

The principal responsibilities of the Senior Clinical Fellow will be the day to day management of the Colorectal surgical inpatients and participation in the Colorectal Surgery operating lists, Endoscopy lists and out-patient clinics as well as the MDMs. This post has been designed to run as a clinical post for one person over 12 months who will gain exposure to a wide variety of advanced surgical procedures, in a busy tertiary hospital offering numerous opportunities to develop specialized clinical skills in these areas of surgery.

The Senior Clinical Fellow will be an important link in the close collaboration of the MDM and will be expected to undertake initiatives to improve patient management and pathways of care similar to those expected by consultants.

This post would be suitable for candidates who have experience in General Surgery at Registrar level. Experience in Colorectal surgery is desirable. Ideally trainees will have completed their MRCP and will have an up to date certification for Advanced Trauma and Life Support (ATLS).

Main duties of the job

The SCF will attend the daily general surgical hand-over meeting from 7:30 to 8:00 am. The SCF will share with the SpRs the responsibility to lead a full daily ward round along with the rest of the team team. The SCF will be responsible for the day to day management decisions of all patients. The complexity of these patients often requires experience, knowledge, ability for clinical decision making and ability to liaise with all members of the MDM for co- ordination of care. The SCF will be responsible to operate either with or without supervision on appropriately allocated patients on an elective or emergency basis.

The SCF will be expected to cooperate with, instruct, teach and supervise other doctors of the Firm at SpR, JCF, SHO, F1/F2 level in their clinical work and audit activity of the unit. The Department is proactively involved with student teaching and regular student teaching is mandatory for the SCF. Post graduate teaching is required, particularly at the basic surgical Skills Course as well as other post graduate courses.
