Clinical Responsibilities:
Provide high quality dental treatment to patients in Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH), either directly or via students being supervised. Provide supervision for student therapist/hygienists clinical activity on clinics across all campuses of Kings Dental Institute and outreach placements, including Norwood Academy and Queen Marys Hospital. The applicant should have an interest in all aspects of dentistry associated with the dental therapists Scope of Practice.
Communicating complex medical/dental information in a manner which is understandable.
Ensure communication with other clinical colleagues (involved in with programme) to ensure consistent clinical practices.
Work with consultant teams in the other divisions of the Dental Hospital to co-ordinate and deliver multi-disciplinary patient care.
Act autonomously in best interests of patient and students.
Offer specialist knowledge that benefits patients, students and staff.
Maintain up to date knowledge and skills on clinical techniques and their application to patient dental care. Provide clinical advice to staff on dental matters, as appropriate.
Act as the first line contact for dealing with informal patient or student complaints.
Partake in Clinical Audit, Clinical Governance within the KCH quality assurance measures and processes.
Ensure collaborative and consistent clinical practices in all clinical disciplines.
The post holder should have an interest in all aspects of dentistry associated with the dental therapists Scope of Practice.
Education and Training:
To contribute to academic and clinical programmes delivered by KCL, with particular focus on undergraduate dental therapy and hygiene degree programme.
To prepare and deliver lectures / tutorials to student dental therapists and hygienists in order to satisfy the GDC learning outcomes and be responsible for quality assurance of the teaching programmes delivered.
To deliver specialised information within the scope of the Dental Therapist/Hygiene profession lectures and information delivery in large group (60 delegates) or small group setting (10) using innovative teaching methods.
To partake in all aspects of the academic, practical and clinical assessment processes for the programmes for each discipline. This includes design, marking of student assessments, provision of student feedback and supporting students who have been identified as needing support.
To maintain records of student activity. Written records of student progress will be prepared and maintained in order to track and monitor student progress throughout their programme of study and ensure educational milestones are being met.
To demonstrate and assess operative techniques during the pre-clinical courses for dental therapy/hygiene students to ensure safety clinical gateways are met.
To offer pastoral support to all students but also supporting students under remedial measures (individualised support plans). This requires empathy to support students during challenging times
To raise Student Fitness to Practice and Professionalism concerns (following KCL policy) and report to appropriate staff member.
Act as the first line contact for dealing with informal patient or student complaints and escalate where necessary.
To support the Senior Dental Nurse in specialised stock control.
To collaborate by working with the Dental Team Education Centre in educational delivery in under / post graduate training.
To participate in dental health promotion visits. These are arranged throughout the student training programme and will require preparation of material and travelling to outreach/community based placements with a group of students.
People Management and Performance:
Manage and motivate staff within the department to deliver and improve services so meeting the needs of students and patients.
Provide support for the department to manage expected and unexpected events within the scope of the student / staff activity.
Supervise and monitor students rostering and skill mix to maximise effective delivery of an effective service (educational and academic).
Ensures risk assessments are completed and actions implemented to meet the health and welfare needs of staff, patients and students.
To regularly monitor and report on quality assurance within organisational frameworks.
Uses problem solving approach. Manages and prioritises workload which changes on a daily basis. Is responsive to changes in work patterns and deal with interruptions frequently during the day.
Periods of concentration required while carrying out duties which may involve direct contact, investigations and report writing.
Ensure personal and professional development of yourself and team/ students through different mechanisms.
Manage individuals (students) objectives to identify assets and weaknesses, providing support and counselling.
Demonstrate an awareness of the physiological, psychological and social needs of students, recognise the signs of stress and promote a supportive and happy work environment
Frequently deals with staffing issues some of which may be conflicting
Governance/Quality Control:
Comply with all the Primary Care Dental Service clinical policies, including IRMER, Health & Safety requirements, Data Protection and other legislation or procedures relevant to the safe practice of dentistry for both patients and staff.
Undertake in departmental educational quality assurance processes that meet the GDC Standards for Education 21 requirements and Preparing for Practice.
Take part in staff meetings and training organised by and for the School
Maintain and complete all required Trust mandatory training.
Participate in all aspects of quality assurance and clinical governance, including audit, peer review and clinical supervision.
Participate in annual appraisal processes and demonstrate progression in line with key performance indicators agreed at appraisal.
Complete other duties delegated by senior staff.
To hold professional indemnity which provides protection for the professional duties undertaken within the hours of employment at the Trust.
Maintain CPD requirements to ensure maintenance on the General Dental Council Register.
