Job summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Organisational and Leadership Development Practitioner to join our high-performing People team. You will work alongside the Head of Leadership & OD and Associate Director in the ongoing design and delivery of Trust-wide leadership development interventions and programmes, applying your expertise in leadership to roll out programmes and events that drive sustainable change and improve organisational effectiveness.

The Senior OD practitioner will seek to maximise the impact of the programmes and interventions by aligning their work with other key change initiatives within the Trust and in the wider NHS context, and will where appropriate be the OD adviser on significant leadership projects within the Trust. Alongside the Associate Director and Head of Leadership & OD you will be part of a high performing expert, enthusiastic, proactive team. As a key member of the People team, you will be a supportive and active team player who advocates for People across the Trust and role models inspirational leadership behaviours.

The Senior OD practitioner will also offer OD business partnering to key sections of the Trust, offering support and advice with change projects, team issues, leadership development, and other key interventions as required.

Main duties of the job

You will:

  • Lead the formulation and development of leadership strategy and support offers for leaders at all levels.
  • Align leadership development with key change initiatives across the Trust and wider NHS context.
  • Provide OD business partnering to key sections of the Trust, supporting change projects, team issues, and leadership development.
  • Champion a continuous improvement mindset and contribute to the strategic development of the OD service.
  • Influence senior management during complex change, encouraging a relational and people-orientated approach.
  • Lead, coach, and manage the performance of your team, ensuring excellence and wellbeing.

Leadership Development

  • Work with associate director and key colleagues to lead the formulation and development of a leadership strategy
  • Develop a comprehensive leadership support offer at relevant levels and ensure accessibility of these offers to leaders across the Trust
  • Work with other key programmes happening across the Trust (e.g., the introduction of Kings Improvement Method, the introduction of a Talent Management strategy) to identify what leadership development is needed within those projects and contexts
  • Keep up to date with national changes applicable to leadership development (e.g., the NHSE Management and Leadership framework) to review all programmes and interventions considering these changes
  • Work with colleagues to develop a joined-up approach to our leadership offer that sits across disciplines and professions

Organisational Development

  • Deliver on key areas in the Trusts People and Culture plan relating to staff experience and culture, ensuring initiatives are aligned with and makes a significant contribution to the strategic aims of the Trust
  • Lead and work in partnership with national OD organisations, NHS and Non-NHS to develop the underpinning knowledge through research and evaluation
  • Influence senior management particularly during complex change, encouraging a relational and people-orientated approach
  • Be informed by key theories; action research, systems theory, OD self as instrument; change theories and actively develop supplemental theories to enhance the impact of OD
  • Actively engage in ongoing personal learning and development and team development through engagement in developmental supervision

Development of the OD function

  • Contribute to the strategic development and leadership of the OD service and work as a key practitioner within the team
  • Work closely with senior HR Business Partners and their teams to provide tailored OD support to the Trust
  • Regularly undertake research and development in relation to organisational development, including horizon scanning for upcoming good practice, benchmarking with other organisations/industries to add value to our internal OD services, triangulation of data to provide meaningful analysis of organisational trends and regularly maintain own continuous professional development
  • Lead, where relevant, the development and implementation of OD policies and processes across the Trust
  • Evaluate change and OD programmes to identify opportunities for improvement and inform related management decision
  • Prepare and present regular reports on performance of various programmes, achievement against agreed KPIs and programme objectives

Financial Management

  • Accountability for procurement of services from external providers where appropriate.
  • Responsibility to contribute to the identification and delivery of cost improvement programmes.
  • Lead the development of business cases or bids for investment in new programmes of work.
  • Budget management for staffing cost in own area, and project manager for financial allocation for specific projects, including equipment and staffing costs.

People Management and Performance

  • Lead, coach and manage the performance of the team in line with good people management practices. Ensuring excellence is recognised and underperformance is addressed.
  • Participate in regular performance appraisal meetings and ensure each member of the team has a clear set of objectives and development plans.
  • Ensure the team is compliance with all statutory, mandatory training together with any professional training requirements, ensuring they are up to date and fully compliant.
  • Manage team absences including sickness in line with Trust policy ensuring the appropriate return to work meetings occur, e-roster is updated, and productivity is at the highest possible level.
