Job summary
The Diabetes Department is seeking a technician with a passion for diabetes technologies. The successful candidate will work closely with people living with diabetes, supporting them to set up and use various diabetes technologies safely.
This role requires excellent organizational and communication skills. Responsibilities include coordinating the delivery of technology to patients and the outpatient department, setting up and supervising new technology starts, and liaising with the public, the diabetes team, the outpatient clinic team, and industry partners.
Main duties of the job

Responsible for the operational management of diabetes technology administration processes and functions, including continuous glucose monitoring and hybrid closed-loop technology. This patient-facing role involves liaising with patients to ensure timely access to diabetes technologies.

Manage the day-to-day setup and delivery of diabetes technologies for people living with diabetes.

Work as a diabetes department technician, assisting in the delivery of diabetes services within specialist areas.

Teach people how to use various diabetes technologies effectively and safely.

Arrange and conduct independent clinics to demonstrate diabetes technology and ensure patients are confident and safe using it.

Download and transfer data from diabetes technologies for clinicians to utilize during clinical consultations, and instruct patients on how to download their own data at home.

Provide troubleshooting advice to patients experiencing issues with their diabetes technology.

Maintain and update the user records on technology platforms used by the diabetes clinic.

Order and manage technology supplies for the department.

Supervise pump and sensor upgrade sessions delivered by diabetes technology representatives.

Clinical and administrative responsibilities
- To act as the central point of contact for both patients and diabetes technology companies, providing a high standard of administrative support in the delivery of the NICE approved diabetes technology.
- Responsible for effective communication across all boundaries to ensure the delivery of a comprehensive diabetes technology service.
- To ensure all enquiries are effectively managed and successfully resolved within a prompt timescale, ensuring all relevant personnel are informed as necessary and an appropriate record is maintained.
- Undertake general administration duties in respect of diabetes technology service I.e. diary management and organising associated activities/paperwork including arrangement of meetings, database maintenance, taking meeting notes and producing agendas/minutes.
- Plan and implement the delivery of diabetes technologies, to ensure an efficient and timely output within diabetes, to assist in achievement of quality and audit standards.
- To ensure appropriate prioritisation of work, in collaboration with the senior nurses.
- To be competent in the application, support, removal and data downloading of glucose and insulin monitoring devices; and to be able to support patients using such devices, whilst sharing this knowledge with others.
- To be competent in teaching patients how to use Glucose sensors, insulin pumps and other such devices. This may involve groups or one-to-one appointments; it may be virtual or face-to-face.
- To recognise your role in supporting the clinical diabetes team, undertaking clinical responsibilities under the direction of the senior diabetes nurses.
- To maintain supplies for relevant tests and for related therapeutic manoeuvres such as supplies for insulin therapy patients e.g. blood glucose meters, sensors, and insulin pumps.
- The post holder will be demonstrate the ability to use a variety of IT systems including, Excel, Electronic Patient Record and diabetes management software systems needed for the downloading and interpretation of monitoring data.
- The diabetes technician will use a variety of computer systems to order and access results. It is expected that the individual will ensure accuracy in the requesting and reporting of results.
- The diabetes technician will inform diabetes medical and nursing staff of any variance to results from local parameters.
- To maintain equipment and undertake internal quality control checks.
- Awareness and understanding of sensitive information, ensuring strict confidentiality at all times.
- Co-ordinate the timely delivery of regular and ad hoc, data / information requested by the management team, producing reports as required.
- To provide a comprehensive administration and IT support, using a range of IT applications to monitor, prepare and validate databases as appropriate producing accurate operational reports as appropriate for the department
