Consultant Radiographer (Breast)

Job summary

The post holder will be a highly experienced Breast Radiographer, able to work autonomously and accountable for their own professional actions. The post holder will be able to assess and manage a daily workload of patients/clients and to ensure provision of the highest standards of care.

Consultant Radiographers are required to work across all 4 pillars of practice (clinical practice, education, leadership and research).

They will undertake all aspects of breast and axillary imaging and intervention including screening and symptomatic work. They will need to have skills in all aspects of intervention including stereotactic and ultrasound guided biopsies, vacuum assisted procedures and localisation device/wire insertion.

They will fulfil all the NHSBSP criteria for a film reader including reading a minimum of 5000 mammograms per year and undertake screening assessment clinics.

There is a requirement to support the King's national training centre and the local educational programme.

If the applicant has an MSc in Breast Imaging but has no experience of working at Consultant Practitioner level but does have COR accreditation as an Advanced Practitioner, a Band 8a Advanced Practitioner post will be considered. Support will be given to achieve accreditation at Consultant Practitioner level. Once the candidate is accredited and has the appropriate experience of working at this level, transition to Band 8b would be supported.

To perform image guided wire/localisation device/marker clip insertion

Must have the appropriate interpersonal skills to teach and mentor student radiographers, specialist registrars in radiology, medical students and work experience students.

To be post graduate module lead for Kings national training centre on relevant subject areas eg Clinical breast examination.

To assist in the adaptation of service to respond to short term and long term demands, training staff to ensure the daily workload is organised in line with clinical priorities, rearranging work lists in case of equipment failure, while being responsive to the inconvenience caused to clients and other staff groups and other departments by short notice cancellation of procedures.

Ensure development of, compliance with, and regular review of, Health and Safety policies and procedures within the specialist area, including ionising radiation safety policies, to provide a safe and secure environment.

Provide timely, efficient and courteous provision of services to the agreed standards of the department taking account of the patient/clients clinical, physical and cultural needs.

Accountable for own professional actions and work within codes of Practise and professional guidelines

Work closely with the Radiologists and breast surgeons to provide a high quality service.
