Job summary
The postholder is one of a team of specialist diabetes dietitians and will provide a highly specialised dietetic service within the multidisciplinary antenatal diabetes services at King's. The Denmark Hill site serves a population who are at particular high risk of developing gestational diabetes (GDM) and type 2 diabetes. This post was originally developed with existing and additional funding to provide vital dietetic care to this existing and growing population.This is one of three core multidisciplinary diabetes posts funded to provide a collaborative and comprehensive care pathway to our gestational diabetes patients.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely alongside a midwife support worker and diabetes specialist nurse to deliver timely telemedicine (particularly using the GDM-health portal) and face-to face clinical support in both 1:1 and group settings. This team sit within the wider diabetes antenatal and dietetics teams.
Regular clinical support will be provided via multidisciplinary meetings, service planning/provision, case reviews and clinical supervision.
This role mainly provides support within an outpatient setting, but when/as required will support antenatal diabetes patients also.
Direct line management is provided by the Band 7 Antenatal/Adult Diabetes dietitian and works closely developing the service and dietetic resources with the antenatal diabetes dietitian at our PRUH site.
The post holder will play an integral role in the large, supportive dietetic team at King's College Hospital. Our dietetics department expects all staff to be involved in the teaching of other healthcare professionals, in line with our mission to provide excellence in clinical care, research and teaching in King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre.
We also undertake student training and this role plays an active role in student supervision for the dietetic department, leading the organisation of student training for the diabetes dietetic team. The department supports flexible working under the King's Flex system.

- Formulate and deliver individual dietetic treatment plans for patients based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of a wide range of dietetic treatments.
- Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
- Represent the dietetic service and/or individual patients at multi-disciplinary team meetings, to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service, and integrate dietetic therapy into the treatment programme. This will include discussion of patient care, patient progress and involvement in discharge planning.
- Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients. Use persuasive and empathetic communication skills to motivate patients so enabling them to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding and/or communicating.
- Undertake the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices through the use of evidence based practice projects, audit and outcome measures either individually or with more senior dietitians.
